With white brick walls and a gorgeous non-functional fireplace, this space is an elegant space with a Parisian flair. We live in a new building in Kamloops and happened to have a huge blank wall that needed a little finishing, so I recently had the opportunity to build a faux brick wall myself!
At first we didn’t know what we were going to do with this wall. It has a fireplace that we definitely want to keep. The fireplace is not in the center of the wall, and there are uneven clearings on both sides of the wall. This forced us to abandon our original idea of creating built-in shelves.

So our next idea was to feature floor-to-ceiling tiles around the fireplace. As I research and look for DIY inspiration, I see a lot of people building brick walls and painting them and I love it! I thought why not?
By deciding to do the whole wall, a project that was around $500 ended up costing $2,000, but I think it turned out very well (though it’s easy to make mistakes like this – we definitely learned something, as I share below!) .
The whitening technique is often referred to as German wax. This is a cleaning solution that brings a rustic yet stylish aesthetic to brick and is often used on existing brick walls that are starting to look a little worn or need updating.
We used decorative Soho brick walls from Ron for the faux brick walls. Their prices are actually very good! The tiles are laid on a mesh base and fixed to the wall with a solution. We knew we took a little risk because removing the tile required replacing the drywall behind it. As you can imagine, we placed them very carefully!
Staining Brick Vs Whitewashing Brick: What To Do?
So we built the entire wall in the middle with a big gap in the middle and that’s the look we wanted.
Most of the tutorials we’ve found are for painting already existing brick walls, so you don’t have to worry about filling the gaps between the bricks. But because we are using tiles, there are large gaps between them that need to be filled.
Usually at this point you should grout between the tiles. This is a place where using faux bricks will make a difference
