If you are trying to choose a blue paint color for your walls, but you can’t settle on your favorite, don’t worry I know why! Either your house isn’t blue (which we’ll cover below) or you’re looking at the wrong kind of blue.
Blue likes to fold in two ways – green or purple. So, depending on where your favorite blue sits on the wheel, it will be blue-green or blue-violet.
Timeless Paint Colors You Will Never Regret
Mixed with green or purple – mixed with yellow (blue + yellow = green) or red (blue + red = purple), however, sometimes it’s easier to say as we see.
And there are some blues that are very blue, but they go easily with their environment and personal feelings, so today we will focus on a blue-green and another blue-purple.
In the bathroom photo above, do you see blue-blue, blue-green or blue-purple? If you guessed blue and green, you win chicken dinner! You are looking at Benjamin Moore’s sea breeze which is a lovely soft blue-green.
While green-blue is “technically” cooler than blue-violet, we know that when it comes to how color feels, it’s not all about technique. Blue-green tends to feel softer and a little warmer than blue-violet – the color of the finger. And btw, this little tip can be very important if you’re thinking about painting ‘other rooms’ blue – which we’ll get to shortly.
The 30 Most Popular Living Room Paint Colors To Choose
So, to see blue-green, you must first see blue mixed with green. Now, if you add more green, you will start hitting those parameters and eventually you will be green-blue, that is. It is a pale green color that fades to blue (think mint or aqua). In the last picture of the room, you should see the blue which is a nice gray – which is common with many popular blue paint colors. However, it is a true blue-green – a bright shade of Benjamin Moore’s Saint Anne.
The simple photo above shows Benjamin Moore’s Gibraltar Cliffs, which is a beautiful blue-grey-green water mix (see more in this blog post).
This background image shows the Benjamin Moore rocking starfish in all its blue-green glory!
Again, blue-purple is supposed to be cooler than blue-green, but it feels cold in the room – especially if you put it in an undecorated room. That’s right, just because you want to paint a room a certain color (ie: blue) doesn’t mean you have to, and we’ll get to that in a moment.
Our Dining Room Makeover
Now the interesting thing is that in my E design, I don’t usually say blue-purple – it just doesn’t fit many rooms/styles. And since I only use photos of my design clients on my website, I don’t have many good photos of blue-purple projects – that’s why I rarely look at them.
But, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t fit your room and in fact, most of the pictures I have are of my house – well, our last houses…
Benjamin Moore’s steel wool is an excellent example of blue-purple (full gray). I can’t even tell you how many people loved this beautiful color!
When you look at blue-violet paint, you should see blue – yes, but don’t be surprised if most people see purple!

Here’s an Ally McBeal deal (familiar, I know), the hard-selling blue in the North Room. why? Yes, blue is a beautiful color. The Northern Lights are a dark gray orange with a blue tint. Put the 2 together and you have a DAMMN cool room! This northern light will make your blue tone more beautiful, and things will feel a little brighter.
Here is anchor gray again in our last home, which was golden up north (and cold from the heart of Tim’s ex-girlfriend).
Blue-green, although cooler than blue-violet, feels softer and warmer and is better for a north-facing room than blue-violet.

Benjamin Moore’s Woodlawn Blue on Romantic Farmhouse Dreams shows us that many mistake it for ‘blue’ when it is blue-green.
And btw, I see the same can be said for east facing rooms. Although they are not very cool, they rarely have warm-feeling rooms and they tend to like green-blue (that’s what they told me… or maybe it was the wine).
If you’re going for a strong blue-purple color, you’ll want to add texture and softness to the room to help offset the cold and winter temperatures.
Notice how the red area rug and the golden hood add balance to the beautiful appearance of the steel wool. In the Anchor Gray images you will see the same golden color as well as the texture that helps balance the cool color tone and exposure.

‘Um Kylie, you’re telling me that north-facing rooms don’t always go well with blue-purple, but you have a north-facing room with blue morbucks!’

For example, let’s look again at our anchor gray family room. Note the carpet – gray
