Is Gray Paint Going Out Of Style? Here’s What Experts Say
If there’s one topic that gets more emails and messages than anything else, it’s probably colors. My house tour with paint colors from our former colonial is actually one of my favorite posts ever! So I decided it was time to write a few new articles about my favorite paint colors. Today we are looking at Sherwin Williams Agreeable Grey.
True story. When we bought this house in preparation for our move to Texas, we decided to do just two things before moving in: replace the floors, paint the basement entryway and two floors in SW Matching Gray. When we arrived (after the worst act in history – another story for another day) I sat on the couch and cried because I knew right away that the colors the painters used
Fortunately, they did. But this experience helped me appreciate Agreeable Gray even more. The color of the beetle wasn’t far off, but it really lacked the beauty of Agreeable Grey… and there was something about the day they (re)painted the walls that helped me know that home could really be home.
I would like to start by talking about painting: its composition, its nuances, its strengths… Then we will discuss in more detail how it is used in real spaces. Note:

Harmonious Gray (AG) is actually a gray color: it’s a warm gray color, which means it’s usually brown or beige instead of blue. I always call it “chameleon color” because it can be light beige or light gray depending on the light.
It is important to consider the nuances of each color so that you know how the paint color can change according to lighting conditions and color combinations.
Undertones are colors that can only appear in certain lights or next to other colors. Agreeable Gray has enough blue to be gray instead of beige, but a
Grey. Although it has a very slight purple undertone, I had no problems with it looking purple (a potential problem with cooler grays) due to the green undertones.

Here, alongside the steel gray cabinets and Carrara marble, you can see that the AG walls take on a paler, warmer gray tone, leaning toward an almost creamy beige.
But here, against the deep brown wood floors (and with lots of natural light), the color looks cooler, more like a true light gray. You can also see a hint of purple hues in the foreground next to a purple-leaved fig tree and pops of green on the back wall of the dining room.
In particular, evening light warms this color to an almost pale creamy beige, while midday leaves it more of a pale steel gray.
Speaking of wall paints, I often get asked which polish should you use for wall paints? In general, plain (sometimes called matte) or eggshell are the best wall polishes.
Gray Paint Colour Palettes For A Kid’s Bedroom (part 1 Of 3)
Plain or matte paint will give you a soft and gentle color and hide the flaws in the wall structure; unfortunately, but flat paint is usually very easy to clean. Eggshell is a bit brighter than plain, which shows more texture on your walls, but it lifts more than plain paint and is a better choice for a home with children or pets. It is also a better choice for wet areas such as the kitchen or bathroom. You can also use satin on walls for better durability and easy cleaning.
The Light Reflectance Value or LRV of any color is a number assigned based on how much light the color reflects, 0 being absolute black and 100 being pure white. The higher the number, the more light is reflected. Agreeable Gray has a relatively high LRV of 60.
If you’re trying to create a light and bright atmosphere in your space, it might be worth looking into LRV. If you have a dark room that needs lighting, you want a higher LRV. Or if you have a room with a lot of sunlight and you want to take advantage of it by highlighting the beautiful light, a high LRV will help you do that.
In contrast, Repose Grey, another popular light gray from Sherwin Williams, has an LRV of 58. Pleasant Gray Vs. Repose Gray is a regular competition. Repose gray is a bit cooler than AG, and as you can see from its LRV, it absorbs a bit more light than AG, making it not as bright.
