So, I’ll start this lesson by telling you how to choose the right products for the job.
Primer is the base of your paint job so you want to choose a quality primer. Especially if you have built-in cabinets like I do.
I used Sherwin Williams Multipurpose Latex Primer. I find this foundation goes on really well and covers easily. I have talked to many professional painters and this is their top choice.
To get the painted cabinets you love, you need the right tools for the job. Here are all the items I used for this project:

Now that I’m talking about primer and the right tools for painting, it’s time to talk about the right paint!
For my project, I chose Benjamin Moore Advanced Interior Paint in Satin (Chelsea Grey). The reason I chose this particular brand and line is because it works like an oil base paint.
It’s self-leveling (no brush strokes), resists stains, minimizes wood grain pick-up (great for the cabin) and makes a great seal for durability. But it works as a water base by simply cleaning with soap and water. Low order and low VOC. It’s great and I couldn’t be happier with how my cabinets turned out.
Now that I’ve shared information about choosing tools and supplies, I’m going to share with you a step-by-step guide to painting cabinets.

Place the cabinet hinges in a regular ziploc bag, then place the bag in the corresponding cabinet. The doors will be stored safely until you rehang them.
Then I removed all the doors and drawer fronts in the garage. I wiped it all down with KRUD cleaner to remove all grease and grime.
My next step was to lightly sand it all down. The purpose of this step is to remove the glaze or varnish from the doors and drawers to allow the new color to penetrate the wood.
So even though this was a big step, it only took me about an hour to sand it all down.
How Much Does Kitchen Cabinet Painting Cost?
After sanding I vacuumed and washed each door to remove the dust. You don’t want small dust particles in your primer as they will show in the finished paint.
Now it was time for the real fun stuff….spray painting! This is where my new favorite painting tool comes into the picture…my Wagner Flexio 890 Hvlp Spray Paint Station. This spray was great from the start.
I love how everything you need (all nozzles, cups, hoses and cables) fits in this sturdy case.
I also like how easy it is to use. The powerful x-boost turbine can spray any coating, including primer paint or uncoated paint. This feature is great because everyone has time to draw thin.

This paint spray station also comes with two different nozzles. A mini nozzle is for smaller projects (like painting cabinets) and has a smoother finish. The other has an ice spray nozzle and a light texture for larger projects (such as house walls).
Make sure you keep an eye on your noses. I mean, maybe I got the wrong one and painted it. Oops! Don’t be like me!
So, using the details, I filled my cup with primer and prepared to change the look of the cabinets forever. I started by spraying the primer
Tart with the back to finish the entire color process in the front. Then there is less chance of peeling or scratching the paint. No one is going to check your closet doors from the inside… except from the outside. 😉

I stopped in the middle of painting this door to show you how good the spray can be. It creates a very smooth surface. Just beautiful!
I painted all the doors and drawers and let them sit for an hour, then flipped over and sprayed the other side. I gave one coat of primer to each side.
I had a few areas that needed sanding when it was completely dry. You don’t want to use regular sandpaper for this step…use prograde sandpaper made for paint. It removes any mistakes like accidental splatters and stains without removing the primer or paint.
After everything was done, it was time to perform these same steps again, but in Chelsea Gray color. I started back at the back…painted all the doors and drawers. Then I let them dry
The Best Paint For Kitchen Cabinets
It’s important to give freshly painted cabinet doors and drawers plenty of time to dry. So I decided to draw and paint my frames while they were being treated.
I sanded everything down, including a bit of the inside of my cabinet shelves (see the blue tape in the photo below) to catch any accidental paint marks. I first applied as much as I could with a roller as it gave a nice smooth coat. Then I went back with an angled brush to cover the areas I missed.
And that’s exactly the process. I did it alone so it took me about two weeks from start to finish. But as you can see… the result is worth it! Building from boring cabinets…….

Painting your kitchen cabinets is the biggest change you can make to your kitchen without a gut renovation. And if you do it yourself, it can be one of the cheapest ways to renovate the space – the cost of materials and of course your time.
And it takes time. People on the internet like to say that painting your kitchen cabinets is a quick weekend project. Maybe if it’s a holiday weekend – and you can take an extra day or two off work! Honestly, this is a DIY project that can take a full five or six days, depending on the size of the kitchen. (you

Here’s what you need to know to paint your old wood kitchen cabinets to look like new (white!).
Before we get into the steps, we wanted to share this before and after. Look how different this kitchen is! Of course, the decorations help, but it’s the clean, crisp white color that makes the room brighter, bigger and more welcoming.

The change took us five days. The first day was a lot of work (a lot of preparation!). Three or four days we were mostly waiting for the paint to dry! And on the last day we did the fun part: put the cabinets together and decorate!
Plan on spending at least $200 to $600 on supplies, depending on the type of paint and how many others you need to buy (along with what you have on hand). While you may be tempted to save where you can, Chris and Lexi caution against jumping in here: “You get what you pay for, materially,” they say. So paying 50 gallons of paint instead of $25 may seem crazy.
