Over the years I have painted many figures, miniatures and models. Whether it’s an Airfix / Tamiya scale plane or tank, Warhammer minis (40k is my favourite) or model trains, I’ve painted them.

In fact, I always have at least one building or miniature in motion, some under construction or modification. Aidret thinks about how many designs have passed through my hands and I seem to always be answering questions about a technique from friends, family and Facebook contacts.
The answer lies in why we use primers and the behavior of different types of paint.
Primers are used as a base coat that gives subsequent layers of paint a surface to which they can easily adhere.
The primer also shows imperfections on the face, which you can correct before painting.
What Are The Best Paints For Plastic Models? — Paint On Plastic
Acrylic is great for painting patterns and figures, has more color options, is easier to work with and clean, and of course dries faster than enamel and oil.
However, acrylic does not mix well with the injection molded polystyrene that most kits are made from. Email is great at this. Adheres well to plastic and provides an excellent base for subsequent painting.
As a result, I always use a primer because, as they say, the enamel takes the ingredient better, and I always use it as a primer. Most of the models you see start life with them.
Once the enamel primer is completely dry, the acrylic paint adheres well and provides a strong, long-lasting finish.

With this combination, you get an enamel surface that holds plastic with a wide range of colors and is easy to work with as a top coat.
In my experience, the most important step to getting good results is to first clean the plastic (with warm soapy water and a toothbrush) and then apply an aerosol enamel primer.
Personally, I – along with more experienced modelers – swear by P3, Citadel (Toys Workshop/Warhammer), Testeri and Tamiya Primer. These spray cans make a fine mist spray that doesn’t really bind the details of your model. I’ve gotten better results from them than the cheap and fancy primary cars that some have used. Citadel, Testors and Tamiya make perfect coatings, not too soft that acrylic coatings don’t like, but soft enough to not add texture to the coating.
Shake the can vigorously, hold it about 10cm away from the model (less for the Citadel spray, more for the Tamiya – experiment to find what works for you) and spray on days with moderate humidity, not too dry. Give several coats about 15 minutes between each coat, then let dry. Modern spray primers dry quickly, but I give it 24 hours to be sure. Painting before the enamel primer is dry accounts for most of the problems I have when using acrylic over enamel.

Finally, be sure to do it in a well-ventilated area or spray and wear a mask.
