Best White Paint Color For Brick Fireplace – Our home brick fireplace makeover started with building a brick fireplace from scratch and ended with a wood beam mantle and accent wall. However, the last step in this complete fireplace makeover project is paint! We knew from the beginning that we wanted brick white to lighten the space as much as possible. After debating whitewash, German paint, and plain paint, we decided that an off-white paint in the same color as the boat paint would look best in this space and be the easiest option. No complicated techniques or special colors required, just use any color of your choice for this DIY with a quality primer. Here’s how to paint a fireplace stone white using primer and regular paint!

Before painting the brick, make sure it is completely free of dust. You do not need to rub unless the stone is unusually dirty. Deep vacuuming of the stone with a good vacuum cleaner brush should be enough. Before painting, cover the mantle, floor and walls with masking tape and protective paper.

First you need to use a quality primer. For this project, I’m using Benjamin Moore Advance Paint, which is a water-based paint, so I’m using Kielz water-based primer. When you paint, you’ll want to use a coarse brush like this and go between all the bricks and all the grout lines first to make sure you really get the paint. Don’t be afraid to hit hard with the brush so that the paint gets into all the cracks and crevices of the brick. Treat the sides and edges of the fireplace with a brush.
Then use a roller and roll out the stone. Cover completely with primer. The roller should do a good job of getting the paint into the pores of the stone. We covered the whole thing with several thin layers. Allow the base coat to dry completely before applying the top coat.
In this step, you will use the same technique for the top coat as for the base coat. We used Benjamin Moore’s Dove White, the same color as the overlay above. Be sure to draw the grout lines with a brush first and then roll the stone completely.
Finally, after the surface paint is completely dry, seal any seams or edges that need it. We had to surround the entire fireplace and floor to hide the imperfections from painting.

Painting a brick fireplace shouldn’t be done all day, but there is a specific sequence that needs to be followed to achieve the perfect painted brick fireplace look. The following steps will guide you from the preparation to the finished product.
Even well-maintained fireplaces are too dirty to paint, so a little preparation and cleaning is required. Start by moving around the fireplace, if there is one; This usually requires unscrewing a few screws on the inside of the housing.
Once the frame is removed and all the bricks are exposed, take a wire brush and gently scrub the brick/mortar joints. This will loosen all the dirt, grime and loose mortar that will affect the painting. Use a wet-dry vacuum cleaner to remove dust.
Now that the dust is removed, it’s time to clean the surface to remove soot, chemicals, oil, and anything else that may be on the stone. Put on rubber gloves, a respirator and goggles and mix the sodium phosphate solution according to the instructions. Use a bucket and sponge to scrub the stone.

After removing all loose dirt, grime and dirt, allow the fireplace to dry for several hours. In the meantime, use tape and drop cloths to protect walls, fireplaces, mantles, and other surfaces you don’t want to paint. Don’t rush this step, as the stone needs to dry anyway, and the more work you do on it now, the less cleaning you’ll have to do later.
Before painting a brick fireplace, the porous surfaces of the mortar and brick must be sealed. Using a product specifically designed to seal the masonry ensures that these pores do not absorb paint, reducing the need for paint and giving you a better result. And the sealer prevents smudging and provides a uniform primer for a smooth finish, especially important if white is your favorite color.
Place the tray liner on top of the paint tray and pour about ¼ gallon into the tray. Using a brush, work the sealant into the mortar and push it into all cracks and crevices with the bristles. Use a paint roller and a ¾-inch backpack to coat the stone with sealant. The thick pile should cover the stone quickly while getting plenty of sealant into every nook and cranny. Apply a second coat if necessary.
Since you’ve taken the time to fill and seal it, painting a brick fireplace is pretty easy. While the putty dries, wash the brush with soap and water. Also replace the liner on the paint tray and replace the new roller bushing with the roller.

Pour about ¼ gallon of acrylic latex paint into the paint tray, then use a paint roller to work the paint into the mortar joints. You go slower with this step than with caulk because it’s easy to miss a spot if you use white or a light color over a lighter caulk.
Repeat this step as often as necessary until you are satisfied with the coverage. When the paint is dry, reinstall the fireplace surround.
While the main purpose of painting a stone fireplace white is to brighten up dark, gloomy elements in the home, ease of maintenance is a secondary benefit. Warm water, a non-abrasive all-purpose cleaner and a sponge are all you need to keep a white brick fireplace looking fresh and clean.
