Hi friends! Thank you so much for showing us so much love for the renovation of our garden. The response has been overwhelming and we are really enjoying our new space… We had temperatures over 106 degrees for 2 weeks before this fever and wicked heat wave hit our region. It becomes unbearable. Needless to say, we can’t wait for this to pass and we can spend more time outdoors again. It’s been hot lately, but we started feeling the heat during one of our biggest outdoor renovation projects: painting the deck. Luckily I managed this before the real vodkas got here. Today I will tell you how I implemented the project.

The main goal I wanted for our outdoor space was to make it feel like an extension of the interior of our home. I wanted to blur the line between indoor and outdoor and knew that painting the deck would be a big contributing factor to the end result. As beautiful as the natural redwood is, I didn’t want it to look like a regular wood deck. I love the warm tones of the hardwood floors in our home and hope to replicate that outside.
Sherwin Williams Woodscapes Stain Review
Because we used redwood, we had to wait a few months after building it to apply any kind of stain or protective coating. This allows the wood and oil to dry completely, so it accepts the stain better and gives better color results. The construction was finished in February and we let it dry for 5 months before I painted it in July. If you’re working with a wood like pine or Douglas fir, you won’t have to wait long (if at all) before staining. After coming up with a game plan for how to tackle the project, I ordered the stain and supplies from Sherwin-Williams.
I used several brushes, rollers, metal pallets, a spray gun, Sherwin-Williams SuperDeck cleaner, and stain to complete the project.
As with any painting project, great results start with a clean, well-prepared surface. I started cleaning and sweeping everything on the deck. Then I cleaned it well. I used SuperDeck Revive Deck and Siding Brightener to clean and wash my deck. This formula is specially formulated for use on new or uncoated cedar, redwood or pressure treated lumber.
I had some help with this part of the project because you have to be careful that the product does not dry on the wood during application. Working in small sections, Naomi and I wet the area and applied SuperDeck Revive with a pump sprayer.
Restored And Stained My ~10 Year Old Deck
After application, she used a plastic brush to exfoliate the area. Then leave for about 10 minutes and rinse with a hose under high pressure.
Once we got into the groove, things happened very quickly. After cleaning the entire deck, we let it dry overnight. The next morning the tree was fresh, renewed and rejuvenated… like new!
Once the deck was washed and ready to paint, I went over it with a broom again and taped it down the side of the house where it meets the deck to protect the exterior paint.
Now it’s time to paint. I chose the SuperDeck Exterior Waterborne formula in semi-solid. When choosing a deck stain, you should consider maintenance and painting frequency. A good rule of thumb is that the darker or more translucent the transparency, the less maintenance is required. Clear and translucent stains require more frequent maintenance and reapplication, while semi-hard or hard stains will last longer before reapplication. SuperDeck is great because it can be applied even to wet wood.

The SuperDeck stain comes in a variety of colors and I chose Chestnut SW 3524. I wanted a deep brown and when I tried the swatch two months ago it was perfect. I painted another small area
Now listen up friends…your daughter dreaded her first brush stroke. Like too scared. We’ve been building our deck for a long time, and the last thing I wanted to do was screw it up. This was a project that really made me trust my vision and process. I started by rolling the stain with a short rolling pin and using a 6 inch deck brush gently brushed it over the brush to even it out. Always apply in the direction of the grain.
The stain took a bit of learning to work with as it is different from any other stain I have used before. Apply as you would paint, let it sit on the wood for a few minutes, then roll without drying the paint. It took me a while to get the hang of it, but once I did it was fine. I was also working against the heat, so I had to move fast. After the first day, I realized that I preferred using a brush to apply the paint, so I pulled out my other work brushes (the Purdy is my FAVORITE!) and used them throughout the project.
Save me from myself the next time I have a crazy idea to paint my deck! I told you it took forever!!! I had no idea how big the deck was until I painted it. By hand. the board. It is huge and took much longer than I expected due to its size. Also, I could only work with it for short periods in the early morning and evening when it was below 90 degrees outside. I recommend you start painting your decks in the fall or spring when the weather isn’t too hot or too cold…just make sure it doesn’t rain in the forecast. Not to mention the shower between them. single panel.
How I Stained Our Deck With Sherwin Williams
It’s been a few days, but I finally finished my first series. I really wanted to take the time to get good results. Little by little I saw the vision coming closer.
The advantage of SuperDeck stains in water-based formulations is that they allow quick drying and overcoating. You can apply an additional coat in as little as 4 hours, and for semi-hard finishes, apply two thin coats for best results. Depending on the size of your project, this product will allow you to complete it in one day! After the second coat was done, I let it dry overnight before moving everything to the deck.
After about 48 hours I did a water test to see how well the stain would hold moisture and it was amazing to see the water roll and roll immediately.
I think a lot of people were surprised when I said we were going to paint the deck because we used redwood in the construction and often people tend to leave redwood floors natural. It is a wonderful quality of wood, resistant to all types of rot and resistant to nature/elements. It turns warm gray over time if left untreated or dyed. Honestly, it was pretty, but when we were just about to build it, I knew I had to paint. I am very happy with the end result. It looks beautiful and it really gives a resort feel.
Stain Color Riverwood
If you are considering a deck painting project, I recommend the Sherwin-Williams SuperDeck product. They also have an oil based formula so next time I might try painting my deck. I’m one of those weirdos who likes to work with oil-based products because it gives you more control over the application process. It takes longer to dry than water-based seas (which is a bummer for a lot of people), but if you really want to take your time and use it properly, it will give you room to move.
