I honestly can’t believe I haven’t done a review for this color yet! Not only is gray my hottest color, it’s also one of my students’ favorites! That’s it; Two slaps with wet noodles.

Choose to flash blue, purple or green undertones – and classy gray is no problem. But, the key to choosing the paint color you love is knowing what you’re dealing with before slapping it on the wall, which is why I’m you (I’m not pretty, you know…).

Classic Gray is an off-white, warm gray with a soft, calm, slightly feminine tone. If you don’t like blue or green undertones, this might be right up your alley!

You should read this, but here’s the gist: LRV refers to how light or dark a color is based on a scale of 0-100, and every paint color has an LRV number. The closer the number is to 100, the lighter the color. The closer it is to 0, the darker the color. You did it!

Now, let’s get rid of that and go back to classic gray. Classic Gray has an LRV of about 75, which in my lil color crazy world means white. And while it still fits my Magic LRV number, it offers softness, light contrast and white trim while illuminating the room.

However, if you have a dark room, classic gray can be dull and flat. If you have a simple room, you can expect Classic Gray to be a bit washed out, but in a medium-light room, it’s great!

Grey Days And Gray Paint

I will say this, but I will say it lightly, because I know some of you are quite sensitive to this undertone… Classic Gray has a purple undertone.

. All grays and grays have undertones of blue, green, purple or a mixture. The key is decision making

And how you feel and the places around you. I don’t like violet undertones, but I find classic gray very residential when it’s appropriate for bedroom products (and we have it in our bedroom).

See the picture below. There’s a reason I chose taupe/greige tiles for the vanity wall – they’re the same color as classic gray, just on a darker scale.

Now, once in a blue moon (or pink would be the main thing), I’ve seen it take on the tiniest flash of pink. Usually in south-facing rooms, but even then, it’s not clear and about what’s behind me.

No doubt you’ll be out soon to grab some paint samples – hang in there! I want you to see the SAMPLIZE. Sampleize offers peel and stick paint samples that are convenient, simple and environmentally safer than traditional paint containers. Here are a few reasons why I recommend Sampleize to my clients…

Classic Gray holds up well in northern light. You will find that it looks like a light, soft, warm gray because the northern light can encourage a slight ‘grey’, not its subtle warmth.

In fact, regarding the photos above and below, E-Design’s client hired me because while she liked the classic gray in the evening light, she felt too cold during the day and was looking for warmer options. Here’s the classic gray at night with interior lighting only…

It’s interesting how the classic gray went from a soft, slightly warm gray to a warm, light gray (hello metamerism)! Either that, or I am easily amused and a color nerd (true and real). Needless to say, I gave her some warm gray options to consider so she would love her bedroom and day!

Ermmmm, maybe not. I mean, you can give up, but don’t be surprised if that purple drop is high. At this depth (unless you’re in a shady spot), expect to be basking in the sun.

Classic Gray, by Benjamin Moore (AKA OC-23 or 1548), is a crowd (and the internet) favorite paint color. In fact, this very popular gray color is included in not one, but two Benjamin Moore color collections: the Classic Color Collection and the Off White Color Collection (this is where it gets the “OC” in its number).

And that’s exactly why I dive deep into different paint colors. The nuances of different colors may be small but can have an impact, so it’s always helpful to know about their details.

Classic gray is a warm neutral color that never fails. It’s a bright confusing color because it’s gray but light enough to appear white in bright light.

This paint shade consists of two collections within the extensive Ben Moore paint range. It has a home in the white collection (that’s what the “OC” in the OC-23 figure’s title stands for).
