What Color Wood Floor Goes With Gray Walls – Learn all about Sherwin Williams Repose Grey, a decent paint color in this color review (Supplied here). Although this bold color can show warmth in brighter lighting conditions, it’s usually on the cooler side. Repose Gray has violet tones. Gray and purple tones are the colors most homeowners think of as “gray.” Rest is a versatile neutral that looks best in a room with light. Gray violets are those that resemble the color of the elephant.

For this project we used SW Westhighland White (example here) as the white base for the roof, trim and doors which were painted white. Westhighland White is a dark white, or even a very light creamy white. We chose this white because there were several instances where we had warm wood in the house and a lighter color would have looked harsh.

In darker or dimly lit rooms it looks cooler and I prefer to contrast with clean white ceilings and trim.

Both white details and warm wood tones look good with Repose Grey, and they bring each other to life. The examples in this project will show how they both look with Repose Grey. As with other violet grays, if you have a lot of green foliage outside, the heat will neutralize the green color so it won’t reflect on your walls.

The photos in this post are from one of our favorite Color Concierge projects and another historic home in Denver. None of the images are color changed and we do not use filters on the images so you can see how the color looks in a room.

I like this project as a case study because it has rooms facing north, south, east and west, as well as examples with white details and warm wood details.

Although white and lighter beige colors are very popular right now, the quick answer is YES! This color is an iconic Sherwin-Williams gray paint color. White wall colors are very popular right now, but they can be cold and difficult to decorate, so homeowners are returning to warmer neutrals. Not everyone wants a house with white walls. For those who want a color that shows contrast to the trim and ceiling, Repose Gray could be a contender for your home. The key is to make sure that this color goes well with the counters, floors, carpets and decor.

Gray Color Schemes That Showcase The Timeless Neutral

The LRV of Repose Gray is 58, which is slightly darker than most grays we choose today. A lighter version would be SW City Loft (Try HERE), with an LRV of 70. The scale goes from 1 (darkest) to 100 (whitest) and indicates how dark or light a color is.

Use Repose Gray when you have lots of light, warm wood finishes and when you have dry white with matching stone or quartz. It is important that you use it with floors, table tops and decorations that have similar shades. Distressed violet gray shades go well with many of the quartz veins which are violet grey. This color can also work well with granite worktops and earthy surfaces, as long as they have the same undertones. Be sure to test, test, test with natural lighting conditions.

This lovely home has been transformed with paint and a few other simple changes. We recommend that the home owner lay a floor up to the first floor. I don’t have pictures, but in the entrance hall it had four different wooden floors that came together in one place. Another super easy update was to raise the curtain rods so they are between the top of the window sill and the ceiling. This small change immediately makes the ceilings look higher.

This dining room is so beautiful with southern light. You can see before and after photos. In addition to Repose Gray on the walls, we also painted the built-in porcelain Westhighland White. We painted the trim and doors white on the main floor, but left them wood on the second floor. It really lit up the main floor.

Also check out the front and rear window treatments. The ceilings look higher and more graceful with the raised curtain rods.

Here is another view from the dining room in the entrance hall. The contrast is beautiful with the wood tones in the trim and mirrors give the room life. On this floor we painted the trim, baseboards and doors white because they were in poor condition. Painting wood white is a brave step to take, but in this situation it made sense, and made the room light and bright!

This picture has been taken over. We had to paint the ceiling SW Westhighland White due to the condition of the wood. Both brick and plaster walls were painted with Repose Grey. Other wooden moldings are still unpainted.

This small area shows Repose Gray with North Exposure and low light. The northern lights are cool with blue tones. Although it seemed darker, it was still good because of the white decorations and ceiling. Adjacent rooms are full of light also added interest. I wouldn’t use this paint color in a house that had this kind of light in most areas.

Gray rest looks lovely, but cooler in the northern lights. You can see how the corners are cooler than the sunnier areas. In this upstairs room, we kept the trim and ceiling unpainted, and they added a lot of warmth.

Adjacent to the bedroom, this bathroom showcases a beautiful combination of painted trim and a warm wooden ceiling. Most of the upper floor had triangles, but in some places we had to paint it because of the condition. This room shows a very nice balance.

Exposures to the east and west are equal. Rooms with light from the east get more light in the morning, and rooms facing the west are sunny in the afternoon (in the northern hemisphere). This example has warm light from the east and large, beautiful windows.

Another simple update is that we painted the fireplace stones Westhighland White (flat glass). The hood was also painted Westhighland White, but in a semi-gloss gloss.

The homeowner considered replacing the tile, but we left it unchanged. The brick was not in good condition and a simple coat of paint made the room light and airy. When painting brick, make sure you are well prepared. Clean the brick carefully and use a good mortar before painting. We chose Westhighland White because it matched the color of the roof. This gave a harmonious and consistent palette.

Note that the previous one was essentially the same. When we paint the brick, coat and trim it TRANSFORMS the room!

This downstairs dining room had west-facing windows to the yard, and tons of foliage. This picture was taken in winter, so not so green outside. In the summer, the gray will look more neutral. The floors have been replaced and all trim painted for a total transformation!

This room also faced west, later in the afternoon. The wood looks so nice with the Repose Gray walls.

I prefer to use this paint color with pure or glossy white such as SW Extra White, SW White Snow or SW Pure White. SW Westhighland White is warmer than these colors and it worked really well because we had a lot of warm wood to work with. Westhighland White is a darker white and we chose it b A lighter or lighter white would look too faint near the woods. White with strong yellow tones like SW Alabaster or SW Greek Villa will work, but they are not my favorite with this color because the yellow can look funky with this undertone.

Combine Repose Gray with rich saturated jewel tones or cool colors. Do not pair muted and cool colors together. The rest can go either way, either quiet or cool. Paint colors yellow or white cream yellow can look dirty.

We always recommend that you test paint colors in your home because lighting can completely change a color.

In the old days, this meant painting a big poster with test pots and a big mess.

You could certainly use this color for cabinets, but I don’t have an example of our work. It is especially beautiful with quartz that has matching tones. Compare your swatches carefully with counter and backsplash colors.

Repose Gray is a wonderful “white” exterior trim color. It also makes a great house all white paint, especially on a very wooded lot. The warmth of this seed color will neutralize the green tones in the foliage. Remember that colors appear brighter outside in sunlight, and this color will look like a soft white without harshness.

Repose Gray is darker and cleaner than Agreeable Gray (Try it here). Pleasant Gray is warmer with a green undertone. Usually if one of these colors looks good in a room, the other will look bad. Learn more about Pleasant Gray in our Paint Color Review here.
