Today’s post will walk you through one afternoon of painting my brick fireplace and the steps I took to get the materials I needed (hint: it wasn’t actually paint).
As soon as we moved into our first home, I knew one of my first projects would be to paint a brick fireplace. While I appreciate brick and admire its character in other homes, the bricks in a fireplace are not pretty. There are pops of red and orange that scream vintage and I wanted a soft, neutral look in our home.
I went to Pinterest for ideas and found lots of pictures of painted brick fireplaces. The only problem is that I don’t like the look of the white bricks. There are some tutorials for whitewashed bricks with more coverage, but that just wasn’t my look.
I did some more searching and found a product called Romabio Limewash. It is a true lime color specially formulated to create a unique lime wash effect on stone, brick and other paved surfaces. This is a 1 layer, self flushing process and is made from limestone quarried directly in Northern Italy. You can read more here.

What I like the most is that you can achieve a custom look with how you use it and you can cover as much or as little of the brick as you like. It is a natural product and washes off within 5 days of use, so if I use it and hate it, I can always wash it off. It seems less stable and more dangerous.
When I look online for inspiration, the limestone fireplace I like best has a two-tone effect and uses a combination of colors to achieve a different look that is more natural than a single color. In my opinion, colored bricks look more voluminous and original.
I used 1 liter of Avorio White and 1 liter of Nube Grey, mixing each in my bucket 1:1 limewash to the water.

This thing is magical! Very easy to use and forgiving. You really can’t screw up. Initially when I mixed it I thought I missed it, I didn’t think the color would stick. Do not be fooled. I have plenty of product to finish our entire fireplace and the color covers it up perfectly.
1. I start by wiping down the brick with a damp cloth to keep my work area clean. Since a fireplace is a fireplace, I decided not to paint it, we will cover it. Cover the mantle and floor around your fireplace with a rag because you will leak!
2. For Limesh to work, the surface must be dampened before applying the product. I took a large spray bottle filled with water and sprayed the brick fireplace until it got wet.
3. In 2 separate 5 gallon buckets, I mixed the 2 colors at a 1:1 water to lime ratio according to the directions on the back of the can. I use a liter of Avario White and a liter of Nube Grey. Limewash is made of bricks and stones, which allows it to breathe and doesn’t need to be flushed. Saves one step and why I love this lime wash more!

4. I started the fireplace with Nube Gray first and used my wall brush to apply it randomly onto one brick without being too careful not to get in the “lines” of each brick because I wanted it to look natural and original and flawless. I recommend a wall brush as they are much larger than paint brushes, so this step is quicker. Plus, the hair is very flexible and easy to work with. *Update: I noticed a reviewer didn’t like the wall brush. I only use Romabio brand brushes which work fine, I can’t name any cheaper brushes.
I’ll paint random bricks and go down the chimney. Since the product is water based, it works, so it’s best to start at the top.
5. After I was done with Nube Gray and went down to the hearth, I followed my bucket of Avorio White and started washing the lime off the top with my wall brush. But this time I painted the rest of the brick, quickly going through the Nube Gray painted one. I was very careless with my process and didn’t try to paint perfectly around every Nube Gray brick. Actually, I did white chalk strokes on the gray bricks and gave them a natural look. The drippings on the gray brick don’t bother me and I really like the more pronounced taste.
It was difficult to get a line of mortar between each brick with the wall brush because it was so large, so I went back with a 3-inch paint brush to go between each crack so everything was covered.

6. I let the limewash dry for an hour, then started removing some of the limewash using a damp cloth on the stove. This is the beauty of the product. Clean and fix for 5 days until calcified and hardened. I wanted the red brick to cover well so nothing was showing, so I honestly didn’t clean up much.
It’s so simple! I was washing the grate one afternoon, it actually took a few hours. It took a while to apply both colors but I think it’s totally worth it and I love the result!

I painted the fireplace old gold with high temperature matte black spray paint to update it and look much more modern. My dad built a new wood mantel that was sturdier and better suited to the scale of a brick fireplace. I love how everything turns out!
