We recently bought a house and turned our basement into a yoga studio. I used to go to many places to teach yoga and now I just have to walk a few steps home. It is glorious! I wanted the studio to be light and bright and a place where both children and adults could come and take yoga classes.

Using the colors from the website and the Be Yoga Fusion logo, I painted the far wall of the studio dark pink with Benjamin Moore Chalkboard Paint. I was expecting lots of paints and more than enough purchases, but it’s always better to have more than enough, right? Note: Paint only comes in one liter size, this wall (about 8 feet x 6 feet) requires 2 liters.

Following the advice I read from other bloggers, I applied a Benjamin Moore primer that matched the pink color I had originally chosen. Chalkboard paint can be any color you want, but darker colors work best to show off the chalk. After the primer I applied 5 coats of tin paint. Allow each coat to dry for several hours before reapplying. After the final coat dried, I let the paint “cure” according to the instructions on the box for three days. Before the first use, I took a long piece of sidewalk chalk and rubbed it all over the wall, which was recommended by several bloggers.

Then I filled the old holes in the bottom drawers so I could put the new hardware in them.

I cleaned the bedside tables with a crude cutter to remove surface dirt, grease and grime.

I thought I’d be proactive and lower the top a bit to avoid those scratches from the top.

So I sanded with 100 grit sandpaper to start, then sanded with 150 grit sandpaper. After that, I sanded everything down with 220 grit sandpaper.

After the slats dried, I sanded the drawers smooth and smooth surfaces.

I mostly used clear shellac to help the paint adhere to the surface without scratching everything off first.

But now I’m on a mission to test if all the paints I use with this clear shellac will adhere well to this clear shellac.

I love how easy it is to spray and unlike some primer sprays I don’t have to sand it after I spray it.

So I sprayed two coats of clear shellac on both tops and let it dry for an hour after each coat.

Before I sprayed the furniture, I tested the spray on some cardboard so I could make sure the settings and paint thickness were correct.

So you can brush it with water, you can add water, but if it hardens, it’s like an oil paint.

One big downside, however, is that the container says to allow 16 hours to dry between coats.

When I sprayed it, it left a little orange peel, but I’ve heard from other painters that this is normal, so I wasn’t too worried.

This is what it looked like after the paint took some time to dry. You can see some of the orange peel left, but most of it is gone.

There were a lot of swirl marks on the nightstand tops, which was very strange because I don’t usually get swirl marks on this surfprep sander.

So, I went back to the drawing board and completely sanded the surfaces down to the rough wood.

While I was sanding them, I had plenty of time to think about what I wanted to do next. I can either repaint them or wood them.

After a few minutes, I wiped the dirty cloth again to wipe off its dew.

Two hours later, after the whitewash had dried, I hand-applied a few more layers of water-based polyethylene.

You can also spray the polyurethane with a paint sprayer, but since this paint doesn’t require a top coat, I decided to be safe and apply the polyurethane to the wood surfaces by hand.

I let each coat dry for a few hours between each coat and sanded with fine sandpaper before the final coat.

I took a few minutes to make sure the green paint was smooth before applying another coat of paint.

Before repainting, I taped the surface to keep the paint off.

I found these drawer pulls in my old hardware pantry and thought they would fit under the nightstands.

I love that you don’t have to hide it. But overall, when drying, it took longer than usual with other paints.

I have heard that these dark alkyd paint colors take a long time to cure… this is very true.

I’ve been painting these bedside tables for a few weeks now and I have to be very careful about placing the hardware.

With other water-based furniture paints and polys, I’ve had no problems with the light still being used after a day or two.

The clear coat primer seems to have worked well. I tried it on the inside of my feet without the shellac. And the paint scratches easily there.

I think it won’t scratch easily where you first apply the shellac after the paint sets.

Yes! You’ll want to use at least one bonding primer. But it is better to use a smudge proof primer and a good primer with good adhesion.

BIN Shellac Primer is a great choice as it has amazing adhesion properties and prevents staining.
