Spoiler alert: I honestly still can’t get over how much I love our newly painted island. I will soon be doing all of our lower cabinets and painting our backsplash for a complete kitchen makeover for under $200.
Preparation is the biggest pain when it comes to painting cabinets. Painting a closet is a super easy DIY project that can make an impact in your space. All you need is patience, proper preparation and dry waiting time.
Most people may run into problems when trying to speed up the process of painting a closet. We love that painting projects don’t involve many tools and can usually be done very cheaply.
Painting Cabinets With Fusion Mineral Paint
If you are completely new to painting, I do not recommend starting by painting a cabinet. Try painting the walls in your bedroom a color of your choice and you’re ready for all the elbow grease.
We love how color can transform a space, just know that it takes time to completely repaint your kitchen cabinets.
Yes, when done right. Don’t expect this to be a quick DIY project where you can randomly slap on some generic latex paint. We recommend using a suitable paint (latex enamel or urethane trim enamel paint) as well as a suitable primer.

What Color Should You Paint The Inside Of Kitchen Cabinets?
We first painted our oak kitchen cabinets white (see the whole process by clicking the link in our post). You can see how they stand in 7 or now 8 years, which is very promising, but after 8 years it is time for a change.
I would still like to work on updating them. I thought I would add some fun color to the kitchen island. However, I needed to find the right way to prepare my cabinets for the emerald urethane paint I planned to use.
FYI, we are doing Sherwin Williams Pro Classic Latex Enamel Painting with SW Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel Paint.
At the Sherwin-Williams store we were told that no priming was necessary and that the surface should be lightly sanded. They noted that any areas where they saw brush marks or other imperfections should be sanded down, as the SW Emerald color is self-leveling and visible.
Tips For Painting Kitchen Cabinets Black
Mind you, we have a few places where I didn’t even notice mold on the drawer fronts. SW Sapphire is self leveling and these spots were noticeable. If I had noticed them, I should have applied wood filler to those areas. They are small so no big deal.
I decided to sand the area very fine and clean it with a deglosser. We always use deglosser before any painting project.
As with our painted bathroom cabinets, we like to use a small foam roller, a small paint tray, and a 2.5-inch fine angle brush. I recently bought a paint sprayer, but the easiest way is to use a small foam roller and brush.
Note: I have no problem using the emerald color with a small foam roller, but some people in the review said they had more success with a little more nap on the roller.

I have more control with a small foam roller and I use it all the time. I love the idea of covering your entire kitchen and using plastic wrap.
The roller allows you to paint the cabinets sequentially at your own pace, and you don’t have to do everything at once. And for this busy mom, it’s very important.
At Sharon Williams, they say you need to keep your cabinets clean. If there are brush marks from a previous paint job, you may want to sand extra fine.
They also mention that you can use a green Scotch-Brite pad to roughen the surface. We always use a deglosser to help prepare any surface (even pre-painted cabinets).

You mark the doors based on how many doors and drawers you have, draw a map, and while it’s hard to do, you’ll be happy when you put your kitchen together.
Do not completely remove the material from the table, only so that the surface is smooth and does not stick.
Set up a painting station for your cabinets and doors. I love the finished feel of the emerald color, but the biggest downside is that it took a while for it to look dull.
How To Paint Cabinets
So you can put your drawers and doors somewhere else to dry longer. We installed wooden horses in our basement and removed the drawers completely.
You can remove the drawer fronts, but I like to raise the drawer in the paint area to save my back and not have to install more sawhorses.
I think this is the recommended method for professional painters who can clean up the inner lines. We made the mistake of using blue painter’s tape instead of our favorite tape to tape the inside of the drawer. We bled a little.
Use painter’s tape even where you think you can’t get a straight line. I thought I could easily paint the lip of the cabinet without the tape, but you will.
How To Repaint Painted Cabinets (our Green Kitchen Cabinets)
Use an angled 2.5-inch brush to cut in areas where the roller can’t reach boxes, drawers, and doors. I like to do this first so you can use the roller to help smooth out the next areas and lightly feather on top of the brush strokes.
Allow to dry before applying another coat. You don’t want your paint to be sticky. Read the paint label to find your dry time. This emerald sherwin williams blue green color dries for 4-6 hours.
Remember, the roller will be fine on the edge of the door (you’ll get a smooth coat).
For your door, you need to be more patient. Due to two layers of paint on each side. We recommend making sure the last coat of paint is on the front to ensure the smoothest finish.
Painted Kitchen Cabinets To Inspire Your Next Renovation
Let everything fall into place as much as possible. To be honest, I felt that a week was the ideal time to keep the doors and drawers closed with this color surface. We have to wait a bit for the hardware handles to be enabled again.
Once you have the doors and drawers, be sure to add small rubber stops to help your doors and drawers rub against the cabinet frame.
Before installing new hardware, allow the cabinet to cure as much as possible. We like to wait at least a week and a month before installing new equipment.
