Sherwin Williams Off White Paint
First off: the color white isn’t actually white. To understand this, you need to understand LRV.
The Best White Paint Colors, According To Designers
The Light Reflectance Value, or LRV, of any color is a number based on how much light the color reflects; 0 is pure black and 100 is pure white. The higher the number, the more light is reflected.
No white color actually has 100 LRVs. Sherwin-Williams High Reflective White (one of the brightest whites you can get) is 93. 80 or more is considered white and “off white” can be around ~70-80. So you have to ask yourself how bright (closer to LRV 90) or soft white (closer to LRV 80) your white should be.
And speaking of “softer” whites, the less bright the white, the more color (aka undertone) is added to soften the bright white. The “off-white” color adds some color to it:
First, you should consider the style. Generally speaking, warm whites help create a cozy feel and go well with more traditional spaces. On the other hand, cool whites can be more vibrant and modern. These are common, but are a good starting point if you know whether you want a more classic or more contemporary atmosphere.

Secondly, you should pay attention to the natural light of the room. North-facing rooms (at least in the Northern Hemisphere) receive little light, while south-facing rooms receive warm light. So, if your room faces north, you may want to choose a slightly warm white color to balance the cool natural light. And vice versa for south rooms.
East- or west-facing rooms are tricky because the quality of light in these rooms changes throughout the day, but suffice it to say that the sunset light can be orange or pink for most west-facing rooms. This can be difficult if the light coming into your home is filtered by lots of tree cover or nearby buildings that reflect their colors back into your home.
Finally, you should try the color in space. Whites are especially sensitive to light colors, floors and other factors in the space… so I always test 2-3 colors before working. Worth the extra effort!
As I said, it is very important to test your color tone in your real space, especially with white. I’ve never had a problem with paint on my walls but I find it can be difficult sometimes. And with the hassle of getting swatches these days, I’m excited to share a great selection.

The pattern will send you a stack sheet made of reusable peel and real paint. This allows you to move the model around the room to capture different lights. I hope you find this tool as useful as I do!
After years of painting my own homes and helping clients with their homes, these have become my go-to white paint colors.
This will be for many interior designers. It is a soft, timeless white (LRV 82) with a very subtle cream. However, unlike many creamy whites, the underparts are beige or gray rather than yellow. It creates a beautiful and elegant space that is still comfortable. It is very similar to Benjamin Moore Swiss coffee.
A white color that is very similar to Alabaster but with slightly less yellow undertones (too light, honestly, my husband swears they look the same 😉), Silos White is elegant and comfortable without being modern. It’s more contemporary or warm with a farmhouse style.

One of my favorite warm whites is White Duck, which is a creamy and soft white. She really likes the beige underneath instead of yellow, which makes it a strong warm neutral. With the 73 LRV, it is an excellent choice for exterior white paint colors as it does not shine in the sun as much as with the higher LRV. Exterior paint colors, in general, read brighter than interior. As an interior color, it looks darker than what you see below, but it’s still soft and rich.
An aesthetic white is the best choice if you want to soften gray, unready white walls instead of white duck. Beauty white isn’t cool, it’s really light gray, and it’s a great choice if colorful light is coming into the space. For example, in our last house our bedroom had only one window facing the red brick house. Most of the light from that window was coming from the neighbor’s house, and the room was a strange pink color. Off-white absorbs a lot of light, but neutral undertones keep the room from looking pink or purple.
All the bedrooms and bathrooms in my house are cameo white – not sure if I can recommend any better! 🙂 Off white is my favorite of the colors, a beautiful light gray and it is especially great when combined with Carrara marble (one of my favorite materials). It’s not too cold though, and with the 81’s LRV it looks like a soft true white.
Much like Cameo White, Snowbound is on the cool side and basically looks real, white on the wall. With the 83’s LRV, the furniture and artwork are quite soft and beautifully polished.
Sherwin William’s 3 Best Warm White Paint Colours
No such list would be complete without a few honorable mentions. My other Sharon Williams white shades are definitely Sharon Williams Pure White (SW 7005) and Extra White (SW 7006).
Pure White with 84 LRV is slightly softer than Extra White with 86 LRV. Pure white is also warmer to the touch. Both make great cabinet and flooring colors and can blend well with your white walls (e.g., pure white finish with soft, alabaster walls) or provide a bright contrast (e.g. gray walls with extra white trim). Learn more about white floor paint (and product options) here.
If you’re looking for a bright white, SW High Reflective White, Benjamin Moore Simple White, or Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace are great choices. Solid white is warmer than the other two, but on 91-93 LRVs these are the three brightest options available.
Speaking of Benjamin Moore whites, White Dove with 85 LRV is similar in gloss to SW Pure White but slightly warmer. And Decorator’s White has an LRV of 84 (same as SW Extra White) with its unique cool aroma.

Warm white paint colors can easily overpower yellow and leave you with walls that look creamier than white. And while Sharon’s whites definitely offer some warmth, you’ll have a range to choose from, allowing you to be as pale or as pale as you want!
But before we look at those gorgeous whites, let’s talk a little bit about exposure (not the vulgar kind… not this time).
White colors have the highest LRVs. If you’re not familiar with LRV, Quick n’ Dirty means that each color has a number on a scale of 0-100 that tells you how light or dark it is. 100 is the lightest and 0 is the darkest (94 is actually the whitest we can get, but I don’t want to bore you with that).
Elements Of Style
White colors are between 82-94 (approx.), which means it reflects light the most. So if you give colored light to your white walls, they will take it. Even if you don’t realize it, different exposures can give our walls different colors!
As for warm whites, if you choose a warm white and have southern light, it will still be warm. If cold beans are with you, great. Otherwise, you might want to look for a slightly softer warm white (ie pure white, as we’ll see in a moment).
On the other hand, if you have a north-facing light and choose a warmer white on the sensitive side, you risk getting some cool gray-blue light.
