Bathroom Light Fixture With Electrical Outlet Attached – In terms of design, I always try to make the common areas look good, but when it comes to the bathroom, I get really tired. The only people who see it are me and my husband, who can’t believe me a bit (as long as there’s plenty of light).
This has been my main bathroom vanity for the last 7 years. Inexpensive, cheap laundry lights produce poor visibility. It’s time to go.

The first thing to do is remove the old device. As you can see, the wall is exactly where we drew it.
The next step is to remove the outlet. Any light that is properly hung will have an outlet installed in the frame of the room. It is easy to remove the tubes attached to the wall by unscrewing them.
I saved the box for later use. I also made sure to pull the romex cable completely from the wall.

Bathroom Upgrade Part 1: Splitting The Vanity Light
Next I used a fun little tool called a “pig hole”. I really doubt the name is real, but we like it. This is a great device! Attach your drill and line up the center point with the center of the hole location and you’re ready to cut a perfect circle!. I’ve used it many times on furniture, but it’s perfect for this application.
I just need to find a pig hole the same size as the existing vent hole and I’m ready to cut 2 perfect circles on my drywall.
I wish I could photograph the next step, but it’s getting dark and I definitely need two hands.
First I had to remove the cable and run it through the wall to the 2 new holes. I’ll explain the wiring process in a later post, but run the cable through the wall and it’s not that bad. I reached a new point, pushed the insulator back and looked until I could feel the Romex wire with my other hand, then pulled.

To deal with the original hole in the dryer, I used one of the circles I cut for the new outlet to fill in the old one.
I attached a patch from the dryer with a dryer pipe. Then I go crazy with plaster and sandpaper and mix plaster over the existing plaster. Below you can see the new outlet and the old hole patched up.
I took the picture when the paint was still a little wet, so that explains the color difference. Also, you may have noticed that the outlet on the right looks a little odd. Yes, I used a rectangular outlet on the round table. The horseshoe I wanted to attach to the side of the hole and not behind it, I came up with the idea of using a deep box to attach to the side of the box instead of the back. While not perfect, it works great and no one notices once the lights are on.

During the renovation I replaced all the fixtures in the bathroom. I have a box that has a light switch and a GFCI and a vanity light controller. When I removed the old equipment, I neglected to see how everything was connected.
Everything seems to be plugged in and running, the switch controls the appliances without any issues, but the GFCI won’t reset, it just stays on.
The breaker and GFCI’s box is straight forward and both have 3 wires, 1 black, 1 white and 1 ground. One for the breaker and one for the GFCI. There are 2 black and 2 white wires inside the light box. One black wire is loose and the other is connected to the black wire going to the wall, this connection is wrapped with bare copper wire.
How To Replace Or Relocate A Vanity Light
I also have 2 white wires. So, I connected the black wire to the black wire on the device, the two white wires to the white wire on the device, and the ground wire on the device to the green wire on the harness.
As I said before, the switch turns the light on and off, but the GFCI opens immediately.
This is the best I can represent the situation. There’s a wall here, so I’ll try to give as much information as possible
When you wire with a wire, the feed comes to the light, the standard feed is one pole with the white wire (requires a code) and the black wire on the back.
Add Bathroom Light Fixture To Gfci Or Not Possible?
If you connect the white wire to the other white wire on the light, you will create a short when the switch is closed, and if you are downstream of it, this will trip the GFCI. Make sure that the conductors of the switch are not shorted.
Note that the switch’s white wire has black tape/labels on both ends. This means that they are used as baseless (thermal) conductors.
