First I had to choose a new blue paint color for the walls and ceiling. We had a lot of snow here in Chicago (it was a crazy winter) and of course the day I wanted to get the paint samples we had a lot of snow. However, I didn’t let that stop me. I put on my snowsuits and headed to our local Benjamin Moore store. Fortunately, it’s only a few blocks away.
I brought a wallpaper sample with me to find a blue paint color to match. Usually, when I’m trying to find a paint color to match a particular cabinet color, pattern, or other design element, I can simply match the color from the paint store to the pattern. They just put it under the scanner and boom… you have your paint! But because the blue on this poster is so small, they can’t scan it to find the perfect match. (Note: I later spoke to Erin, the wallpaper designer, and she told me that the blue color is actually Benjamin Moore, Blue Springs. Oh, I had already painted the room by then. So my game plan was to look at the swatches and find the light blue and warm undertones. I didn’t want it to read too purple and I didn’t want it to read too cool. Instead, a light gray with a bit of warmth was my main goal. I looked at the samples and brought home four paints to try on the walls.
I always like to paint my design directly on the wall and place it in different places in the room. I know some people paint the boards or sheets and move them around the room, but I like to see color on the walls. I never had a problem painting over the swatches and seeing the original color underneath, so that worked well for me. It was the same with the project. I was talking to a guy at a paint shop and asked him what is the best way to work with two different glazes of the same color. He said he would paint the ceiling first (two layers) and it would be nice to put that mat on the walls. Then he told me to cut an eggshell on the ceiling and paint the walls normally. That’s exactly what I did.

Before I started painting, I cleaned the room. Finn and I removed the old mattress and the box springs; I separated the headboard from the bed frame. and I cleaned all the dust bunnies that hide behind the furniture.
My Dyson wrench, which is a bit sticky, was the perfect partner for getting all the dust off the furniture backboards. It felt good to clear the space. Once all the dust was gone, I removed the windows and doors and used masking tape around the windows and doors.
Finally it was time to paint. I followed the directions of the paint store clerk…I painted the ceiling first and then down. I was too scared to even type on the poster for fear of tearing or dulling it, so I cut the poster a bit. It took time, but it was worth it.
I find that using a roller extender really helps. I just had to climb a ladder to cut the wallpaper. The rest of the ceiling and the upper parts of the wall are made of cylinder. This saved some time, but this project took me all day, by myself. My mom took Rory to her cousin’s that day and they left at 8 o’clock. When they came back at 5:00 pm I was cleaning. It took so long. I ended up watching the whole season

Here is a view from my back to the ceiling as if I were lying in bed. Isn’t that cool? I’m so glad I picked the paint color at the end of the wallpaper because now it’s the highlight of the room. It stands out and adds something special to the design.
