Farrow And Ball Ammonite Colour Match – One of the most common questions I get asked here and on Instagram is, “What paint color is in your living room?” I understand. Farrow and Ball Ammonite is a small but surprisingly soft gray that works well in a variety of spatial and lighting settings. I would like to share my Farrow and Ball Ammonite review and tips if you are planning to use this paint color.
I’ve used many different brands of paint over the years and Farrow and Ball paint has some definite qualities. The first is the choice of color. Unlike other brands that offer every color under the sun, the Farrow and Ball palette offers a fairly limited selection. You won’t find anything too bright or neon in Farrow and Ball’s colors. There are only a few white and black.

This Farrow and Ball color chart is from 2018 I believe, so it doesn’t have all the latest colors. You can see all Farrow and Ball colors by ordering the free Farrow and Ball color chart. The paint card photo above shows about half of their paint colors. They don’t introduce new colors often and only offer 132 different colors.

Farrow & Ball Exterior Masonry Paint
Along with depth of color, Farrow and Ball paints are known for their unique finishes. Farrow and Ball paints are different from the usual gloss, semi-gloss, satin, eggshell or matte. Farrow and Ball usually offers low to medium gloss paints and their paints have a chalky matte finish.
I personally did not find their paint to be any less durable than, say, Benjamin Moore or Sherwin Williams paint. They are cleanable and withstand normal wear and tear. Note: This is my favorite product for cleaning scratches on painted surfaces!
In addition, the color does not fade. We went and repainted our living room, it’s been a year and you can’t tell the difference. I can’t say the same for Benjamin Moore – I had to repaint the whole room white because the underpainting is noticeable even with white paint!
This matte quality gives Ammonite Farrow and Ball paints a deep and complex character that other paints cannot replicate. This is why you pay a high price for Farrow and Ball.
Top 12 Farrow And Ball Paint Colors
If you try to paint a Farrow & Ball color with another brand of paint, be aware that you won’t get the same depth, personality and texture. But you can get close to the same color. Here are some paints that have a similar tone, reflect quality and richness, and are suitable for ammonite dust:
I think the Farrow and Ball Ammonite holds its richness throughout the day. Unlike other brand paint colors that can look completely different in different lighting conditions, Farrow and Ball Ammonite looks equally bright in morning light and dark.
When we were looking for a paint color for this living room, I knew I wanted something that was neutral and could work with different decors and throughout the season.
I gravitate towards off-whites and warm grays. Something with character but can be a neutral backdrop for my changing accessories. I quickly settled on either Amonite or Cornforth White as my first preference and picked them up for comparison.

Besides cleaning and gluing paint swatches, another way to choose a paint color is to make your own paint swatches. You can draw them directly on the wall or draw them on sheets of white paper. So you can move samples around, try them on different walls, move them day and night.
Ammonite no. 274 is the perfect gray in my opinion. It doesn’t seem too hot or too cold. We also considered Farrow and Ball Cornforth White but found it too dark due to the north east light coming into our living room. Ammonite has a warm undertone and is not as blue as some grays can appear.
This is what Farrow and Ball Ammonite looks like with two layers on the wall. It’s just a pic from my phone, but you can see how much warmer and richer it looks against the white pre-primed MDF and the current semi-gloss creamy white paint on the doors.
Here you can see how the Farrow and Ball Ammonite really accentuates the architectural details in my living room. The paint color does not compete with the room. This emphasizes the details and makes the decor stand out.
Farrow And Ball Ammonite (274) Vs Dulux Heritage Pale Nutmeg Side By Side Comparison
Make no mistake, this delicate paint comes at a price. Farrow and Ball paint is $110 per gallon on their website. Is Farrow and Ball worth it? I think. With premium paint, you’ll want to think about where you’ll be using it. I used it here in the living room because I know it will be one of the most used and visible rooms in our house after the renovation.
This type of paint is not suitable for small, inconspicuous projects such as closets or guest rooms that are rarely used. Reserve this paint for rooms and spaces that will make a big impact – living rooms, hallways, an entire wall of kitchen cabinets.
We have found that two coats of Estate Emulsion are sufficient for wall decoration. The crown molding, baseboard, fireplace, and other moldings where we used Estate Eggshell required three coats to get the desired depth of color and even coverage.
On the surface, ammonite looks like a normal warm gray color, but I found it to be very complex and difficult. Regardless of the weather, you feel at home here. Whether I use blue and orange in the summer or red on vacation, Ammonite works.
Farrow & Ball Colors Matched To Benjamin Moore
But I have to say, I love Farrow and Ball Ammonite in the fall. During the day, colored light gives this room a softer light and creates coziness and warmth. The fall color palette of creams, rusts, blacks and browns really brings out the best in ammonite.
