It was therefore fitting that the popular novelist should sleep on the Black Mountain, where the terrain suited the imagination of O’Donoghue’s mind.

“These mountains have a special charm for me,” Caron says from his cabin in Black Mountain. “Although some mountains roll to the north and are low and calm, our mountains rise before your face and you can talk to them.”
To Be Where You Are
The beloved author, with an undeniable charm, is known for a series of 14 novels set in the fictional town of Mitford, now one of the most memorable towns in modern fiction. The first book, 1994’s At Home in Mitford, has been reprinted more than 80 times and has been nominated three times for the American Booksellers Book of the Year Award.
The Mitford series quickly gained millions of fans around the world. In 2014, Mitford fans packed the Ridgecrest Auditorium for Karon’s first public appearance at Black Mountain for the First International Mitford Homecoming. In addition to the Mitford novels, which topped The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal bestseller lists, Caron is the author of 12 other books, including several for children and a cookbook made from dishes served at Mitford.
A small town girl, born on a modest farm near Hudson, has bought, renovated and painstakingly decorated a small house in the Black Mountain. But there are strong ties to Virginia, especially in the Charlottesville area.
Virginia awarded him one of its most prestigious literary honors, the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Library of Virginia. Other authors who have received the award include Tom Wolfe, Rita Dove and Edgar Allan Poe. Hundreds of boxes of Caron’s personal and business papers, videotapes, and audiotapes are archived at the University of Virginia in its special collections.
An Evening With Jan Karon
Caron’s main reason for landing here was to have fun with his daughter and only daughter, Candace Freeland, who moved from Hawaii to Black Mountain a few years ago. Freeland is an award-winning musician, songwriter and photographer who shot the cover art for three of her mother’s novels, Somewhere Safe With Somebody Good, Come Rain or Come Shine and To Be Where You Are.
It didn’t take long for Caron to start enjoying the charm of a small town known as Gunung Black. One of the defining characteristics of a community is a sense of connectedness, and that’s exactly what the retired writer found in her new neighborhood.
The neighbors who will let you know when a bear walks down the street, who smile and wave as they pass, are Black Mountain.
At first, some literary critics of New York complained that the city created by Caron was unrealistic, that the people were too good, too nice. But he stood his ground and continued to write about Mitford people. His response to the naysayers is simply, “That’s because you don’t live in a small town.”

“In many ways, Black Mountain exceeded some of my ambitions for Mitford,” Caron said. “I was greeted with affection and love and a kind of friendship that I’m not sure still exists.”
He learned to read at the age of 5, and although the local library was too far to walk, Caron developed a strong addiction to libraries. We can thank one of the founders of our nation, Ben Franklin, for our library system, which began as a concept when he suggested to his friends that they collect all their books in one place and meet to read them, “which will be almost as useful. as if- everything belongs to everyone”.
When the folks at Black Mountain Library approached Caron about giving a fundraising talk, she enthusiastically agreed.
Tickets are sold out for their upcoming event at the Blue Ridge Assembly, aptly named “At Home in Black Mountain.” Proceeds from the event on Sunday, Oct. 6, will help the library achieve its broader vision, said Gwyn Ridenher, head of Friends of the Library.

“We are in a new era with the library as the cornerstone of our city’s literature and culture,” said Ridenher. He credits branch manager Melissa Presley for expanding the program, increasing the collection and improving the facilities. “The October event not only raises additional funds for our branch, but also connects the library with unique and meaningful community programs,” said Ridenher.
Now 80 years old, the Black Mountain vacation is part of a well-deserved break in Caron’s novel output. He still travels a lot, for business and pleasure, but spends more time here.
Caron’s millions of fans pay close attention to his Facebook page, where recent posts from his iPad include photos of his office and musings about being “lifted by heart.”
She is an uncompromising Southerner and a woman of great faith. Online and in public speaking here and there, Caron remains an endless source of encouragement and wisdom gleaned from his time of keen observation of the people and places around him.

A Light In The Window By Jan Karon
Jan Caron was born Janice Meredith Wilson in 1937. He grew up on a farm near Lenoir, North Carolina. Like many established novelists, she knew she wanted to be an author from an early age.
In fact, at the age of 10, he wrote his first book. At the same age, he won a short story contest coordinated by the city’s high school. At the age of 12, he moved with his family from Lenoir to Charlotte.
After graduating from school, at the age of 18, he started working as a receptionist at an advertising agency in Charlotte, North Carolina. She continued to leave her sample on the desk of her boss, and after he recognized her talent, he promoted her and allowed her to advance in her career to higher paying jobs.
He eventually became vice president of creative at McKinney & Silver, an advertising firm based in Durham, North Carolina. During his years there, he also won the prestigious Stephen Kelly Award, an advertising award given for excellence in magazine advertising.
The Mitford Years #3: These High, Green Hills
While working for many years in advertising, Jan Caron never forgot his dream of becoming a writer. Finally, at the age of 50, he left a lucrative career to focus on writing and moved to Blowing Rock, North Carolina.
It took several attempts and failed until one day he knew what he wanted to write about: a shepherd in a city or a small town. This is why Father Tim Cavanagh was born. The author began to write small excerpts from the book in local newspapers and saw great interest from readers.
Over the years, some of his books have been nominated or won several awards. In addition to writing the faithful series, Jan Caron’s book list includes other companion stories that will be part of The Mitford Giftbook series.

In his book, Jan Caron focuses on life in small towns, which he considers more idyllic and intimate than life in big cities. His books also note a strong connection with the author’s faith in God. At first, Father Tim lived a quiet and lonely life.
