Ikea Hemnes Chest Of 8 Drawers – Anyone researching changing tables or nursery furniture will surely come across the IKEA Hemnes 8-drawer cabinet. We’ve also decided to jump on the Hemnes bandwagon… and here’s why:
The only thing we had to decide on was the color of the cabinets – more precisely, we had to choose between “white” and “white stain”. The “white” cabinet is like your standard IKEA white – it’s not really white and has more of a sheen. The Spot White option looks like true white and has a smooth finish. It’s a little obvious because you can see the grain of the wood all the way through, but it’s not noticeable.

In our opinion, the white dot looks more sophisticated and natural. The clarity of the stain didn’t bother us either, as we liked its rustic look. It’s up to your personal preference, but we decided to go with a white stain.

Like any IKEA furniture, it can be intimidating at first. Our advice is to organize everything as you go (including hardware and fittings) to ensure you have the right amount of parts. The template comes in 3 different boxes:
It took us about 2 hours to gather. There were a few steps that left us scratching our heads, but eventually we figured it out. It’s best to take your time and get it right so you don’t have to go back and do anything.
We did not install pull handles because we planned to customize the fixture with different pulls from Hobby Lobby. We’ve narrowed it down to two options – sprocket and pull (the original knobs that came with the upgrade are on the left):
Nader loved the stars and Mel loved gravity, but in the end we went with the curious gravity of the stars. We waited until they were 50% off and bought 12 new devices:

To spray the paint, Mel punched a hole in a piece of cardboard and rotated the pullers. We went with the spray paint we had in the garage – Rustoleum Oil Rubbed Bronze:
Note: The screws that came with the star had to be cut with a small saw because they were too long and stuck in the drawer too much.

Excellent…Certified Inspector This was what we were looking for and purchased with a glass tip for added protection. A set of sturdy drawers with thick drawer bases. It took a while to build, my advice is to make sure every screw is drilled before building – it was about 1mm and it prevented the drawer from fitting properly! It is designed to be very playful. Drawers fit into specific locations, it’s trial and error… for a good set of all useful drawers.5

The drawer is a few millimeters too high, so it does not close without effort. Designs have small tolerances for manufacturing precision, so this is a significant and frustrating drawback. Over time, due to fitting, the paint on the top edge of the drawer will wear off. Considering the price, I would avoid it because the drawer surface is not adjustable.
