Davis Custom Finishes had our house painted a few weeks ago. Asa Davis (our friend and favorite local Nashville painter) is back today to share tips on painting exterior brick yourself. We used the same paint for the masonry and woodwork, which saved us a LOT of time.

This is a before and after comparison of my house. The paint makes a HUGE difference. The only change here, other than the paint color, is replacing the doors with mid-century inspired doors, more appropriate for the era.

Depending on the size of the house, you can completely paint the house yourself. For the size of our house, we spent about $1,000 on paint and about $7,500 on labor. So you see that labor is the main cost and if you take the time to paint yourself you can save a significant amount of money.

Regarding the size of our house, I have to say that it is a little confusing in the photos because it is built on a hill. So there’s one story in the front and almost three stories in the back (BELOW our walkout basement is a storage basement), so there’s a lot more brick to paint than does show the front elevation.

If you really have a one-story home, this project might be something you can do with one or two people in a weekend!

We chose Behr Masonry, Stucco and Brick Paint which are available online, pre-painted and ready to use. This can be used for interiors or exteriors (I’ll show you how we used it for interiors at the end of this post).

During quarantine, one of our main “hobbies” is driving around the neighborhood and looking at various paintings. I realize that many houses look a little stark when painted off-white (I can only assume).

But there is a point where the cream color becomes TOO beige and looks dull. I wanted something that said “really white” when you walked past it, but it’s actually a bit boring. Swiss coffee is the perfect color for this. I am very satisfied with it.
