Living Room Paint Colors With Oak Trim – If you’re looking to update your home and need to avoid expanding the honey oak kitchen cabinets or trim, then a few coats of the right paint shade can instantly bring your space into the modern era
Oh dear Wood of choice in 80s and 90s homes. Of course, oak does not have this original honey tone, but over time it takes on an amber color due to the use of dyes and polyurethane.

Unfortunately, honey oak kitchen cabinets, moldings, frames, doors, and even floors do not have the modern look that most homeowners desire today.
Paint Colors That Go With Oak Cabinets
Whether you have budget constraints or just don’t feel like tackling cabinets or the whole house neatly right now, you can work with your oak nightmare!
Interior wall paint can do wonders to transform any space, and a room full of wood is no different.
First of all: you have to decide whether you want to highlight the wood tones or blend and camouflage a little?
The most important thing to understand about oak honey is that it has a color, and that color is orange, or a more yellow-orange tone.
Paint Colors That Pair Well With Wood Trim
Of course, other types of wood can be stained and finished with the same orange or yellow color, but generally when we see this color, we refer to them as “honey oak”.
Other woods, such as maple or pine, can also be distinctly yellow or orange, due to the stain or polyurethane used for the finish and the fact that polyurethane turns amber over time.
When looking for a paint color that matches honey oak, flooring, or even cabinets, you should always keep in mind the color of the wood you are using.
Unfortunately, that probably won’t happen. Like many things from the 80s and 90s, the honey eye has seen its hay days and may not be making a comeback anytime soon.
How To Choose Colors That Complement Wood Furniture And Floors
But just because honey oak is no longer standard doesn’t mean your home should remain stuck in the same era forever.
Whether your trim, cabinets or floors are a lovely yellow-orange shade, there are actually things you can do to modernize your home.
In order to know which paint color is suitable for this wood tone, it is important to understand the principles of color theory.
Honey oak, known for its orange color and strong grain, should be chopped or accepted alone and choose a color that looks good with it.
Baseboard Trim: To Paint Or Not To Paint
To achieve this with paint, you need to create a harmonious color palette (analogue) that uses a color similar to the dominant tone (orange) to help blend the oak honey, or create a contrasting palette that combines something complementary or opposite colors that enhance or create a point oak honey focus.
Whatever color palette you choose to work with, you need to pay attention to the nuances of the wood to determine the best paint color.
There are two main ways to transform honey oak trim, doors or cabinets, just by painting the walls:
Finding the right color for your honey oak cabinets, trim or flooring is all about finding a harmonious color palette, either with analogous or complementary colors.
Classic Wall And Trim Color Combinations—and 5 That Break The Rules
If you’re already confused by all this color theory jargon, take a look at the color wheel and identify the color you’re trying to use. Honey Oak is orange. From there, I recommend using one of the following two ways to create a harmonious paint color palette:
By using two colors on either side of your main color, you create a similar color palette. In this case, we are working with orange, so the colors on both sides will be yellow and red.
Obviously you don’t have to paint your walls orange, yellow or red, but these are colors you might want to consider using. Therefore, beige with beige, beige with an orange background, and gray with a warm, creamy beige are suitable. Avoid green-beige shades, as they start to look plain compared to the warmth of the cabinets.
If you surround the warm oak with other warm colors, it will blend in and look like a goal. A soft and warm neutral paint with orange or yellow tones can make the space harmonious and help the garden fade a little.
Paint Color Trends Designers Can’t Stop Talking About
Again, stick with natural and understated colors. The appearance of warm oak is very natural and combines very well with colors taken from nature. You want to make sure that there is still enough contrast so as not to leave space without meaning. I think that using gray (even if it’s technically the correct shade) can leave a room with a lot of honeyed oak and leave the room feeling clean and drab.
By using colors from opposite sides of the color wheel, you get a complementary color palette. The color on the opposite side of orange is blue, the opposite of yellow is purple. Any bright blue will contrast sharply with the orange in the honeydew, thus enhancing the color effect.
Before you start thinking that contrast is a bad thing, it’s not. A well-designed room has a contrast that works great between different colors to create a solid color scheme.
Providing some contrast with orange cabinets can be a good thing. You just don’t want a bright primary blue color on the wall! However, using this color in a more subtle way (a blue-green paint color, for example) will create balance and add life to the cabinet without making it stand out.

Enough color theory! Let’s look at some colors combined with oak honey and you will see better what works.
Based on what we have discussed so far, we stop at painting a warm gray or beige color with yellow or orange tones (or a little pink to approach red). If we want the cabinet to be a focal point and really stand out, we will focus on complementary colors and add a little blue and green.
My favorite paint color for a modern house is usually gray. Although designers will tell you that it is losing popularity, most owners still love it.
And while I’ll be sharing some warmer grays and beiges with you in this blog post, I usually find that cooler grays paired with warm, honey-colored oak cabinets create a simple pale look.
How To Pick The Right Paint Color To Go With Your Honey Oak Trim
So let’s get down to the nitty gritty and talk about some paint colors that will really work.
This is a warm gray with green/beige undertones. It can be quite a saturated color if you don’t have a lot of natural nights, so definitely try before you commit.
I love this paint color all the time, but it does a nice thing next to the honey oak. It has a modern gray look, but with a lot of cozy warmth that goes well with the orange color.
This is as gray as I want. Repose Gray has slight purple and green undertones that keep it from falling out completely. Repose Gray is my all time favorite paint color, but I think something warmer would work better with honey oak.

Sherwin Williams Comfort Gray (SW 6205), contrary to what its name suggests, is actually a light blue-green paint color with gray undertones.
It’s a beautiful paint color that brings a beach vibe to any space. It works just as well with oak and other woods (even dark mahogany!) as it does with a crisp white finish.
And while you can see how beautiful it looks in the kitchen above, it’s also the perfect color for a bedroom or bathroom.
This is my first choice for a beige that goes well with oak honey. It’s the right kind of beige that isn’t too tan and doesn’t stretch.
Tips For Decorating A Living Room With Dark, Bold Paint Color
This is another close contender for the perfect beige next to oak honey. I love the warmth and how it plays with the orange tones without looking “blah”!
If it’s not an orange cabinet sampler and you just need a color to match the honey oak floor, then I think Oyster Bar is a solid choice.
Although it seems to fall out of favor with the more modern grays and grays, it is still a beautiful warm beige that goes well with orange or yellow wood.
It has been described as a “warm and neutral water cake”, but also as a “mushroom”. I agree with both points. It’s a more traditional beige, so it might not be your best choice if you’re looking to modernize your room. But if you like to tan, of course it works.

Not only does it match, thanks to its warm beige color, but the purple helps to minimize the orange of the oak, molding or floor.
White Dove is always a great white choice when it comes to other hot items. It’s a soft, buttery white with just enough yellow to pair well
