I recently got around to painting some furniture that I had been putting off for about a year.

How To Upcycle A Dresser With Annie Sloan Chalk Paint

My favorite Anne Sloan colors are Graphite and English Yellow. This 50’s wardrobe is the first to be made – English yellow on the back and graphite elsewhere. Someone who was getting rid of it gave me this piece of furniture, and I was going to sell it, but now that it’s painted, I really like it. No problem with this part, just pure Annie Sloan wax.

Next was a small Hungarian table that I use in the printer. It was already painted a horrible bright yellow (sorry, no “before” pictures), so I decided to give it a yellow English flood.

I had a gold mirror bought in a thrift shop for £20 two years ago when I was doing English Yellow. I thought it was different and interesting, so it hits both ends. I may add more black wax to the cracks, but for now it gives the kitchen a nice solar warmth.

Next, my workplace. This is the wardrobe I use for work, and it has a yellow mirror on it. It was painted with a dark gray gloss paint and I like to paint with chalk. Again I used graphite. However, this color can be a bit dull on some textured furniture and that’s okay. It can be secured with a layer of black wax on top of the wax.

A big hit was the next item, a gilded mirror that I had for 5 years and never liked it. Sometimes painting furniture involves trial and error, so give it a try. Mix colors, layer one color on top of another, use a wash (50/50 diluted paint/water), and more. In this mirror I used Aubusson Blue and Old White, followed by clear wax and black wax. The transformation is amazing and the shape of the mirror has really improved (sorry, no before pictures).

Next the jury is out – I don’t like the finished look. The board was originally light grey/green when I bought it (first picture below) and then I painted it with graphite. I have to drop this because now the effect doesn’t match the elegance of the table. So it’s back to the drawing board with this part. As I said, trial and error!!
