Benjamin Moore Wood Stain Colours – Experts say stain your deck every couple of years to keep the wood healthy. There are two types of paints – oil-based and acrylic-based. The oil penetrates the wood and protects it from the inside, while the acrylic sits on top and protects the wood from moisture. If your deck already has stain, it’s best to stick with that type of stain. You cannot apply acrylic over an oil stain. That would be a disaster.

We are delighted to have Benjamin Moore’s Arborcoat available in our store today. This color is the best color for your outdoor project. It is suitable for use on wood, cedar and pressure-treated redwood, although it can be used on any wood. It has excellent color reproduction and is very durable even in our harsh and variable seasons.

New wood: Plank, scratch, or scratch wood planks should be carefully sanded or “wet glass” broken up with Benjamin Moore Brighton, Brightener & Neutralizer (317) to allow proper, regular penetration. After preparation, test the adhesion by placing a few drops of water on the dry substrate. If the water does not drain quickly, repeat the preparation or consult your Benjamin Moore dealer.

Weathered Wood: Before staining, treat weathered wood with Benjamin Moore Restore (316), following label directions, until a sound surface is obtained (broken or damaged wood grain).

Previously Painted Surfaces: Used on previously painted and stained wood in good condition. If there is general flaking in spots, all previous finishes should be machined off the floor or washed using Benjamin Moore Finish Remover (315).

In my mind, clear stains depend on the type of wood, meaning the same stain will look different on different types of wood because the color of the wood will add color to the stain you use.

Semi-transparent resins come in 75 different colors. Semi-transparents still show most of the wood grain, but have more color underneath than translucent ones.

With the same 75 color options as semi-transparents, semi-solids are more transparent and reduce a variety of colors. So they hide imperfections and create a thin barrier on your wood. Because wood droplets penetrate the wood and sit on top like dyes, wood chips are slightly visible depending on the color. (Hint, the darker the color, the less wood will appear.)

Hard stains are like paint but soak into the wood instead of sitting on it. It captures the grain of the wood without darkening its texture. High durability and an unlimited choice of colors make this our most popular paint choice.

The key to a successful redesign is preparation. Depending on the condition of your deck, you may need to take a few steps to prepare it for staining. Opacity 101 When it comes to the effect of stain on your deck design, understanding opacity is key. Saturation is the degree to which you can see the natural grain of the wood, this can be achieved by using one of the following… Clear color has no added color and reflects the natural beauty of the wood. A clear coat does not distort the grain or texture of the wood and has only the slightest tone. The semi-transparent color allows most of the grain and texture to show through. Semi-solid paint, with its deep hues, covers most imperfections while allowing some of the grain and texture of the wood to come through. Solid paint offers the greatest depth of color of all, covering most imperfections while allowing the grain of the wood to stand out.

Consider Color: Many Choices When thinking about color for your deck, consider the same shade as your home’s design. This technique will stand out against the main part of your home for a cohesive look that still highlights the architecture of your deck. For a more consistent look, use a color similar to the main color of your home, a good choice if you want features like your fireplace or dining area to be the focal point of your deck. There’s a huge color spectrum to explore, from wood grays to warm reds to forest greens.

Wood Matters is the most common choice for wood piles. More expensive hardwoods, such as mahogany or ibex, offer a beautiful grain and texture that shines through when using a more transparent stain, such as translucent or semi-transparent. Softer, less expensive woods benefit from the natural air barrier of semi-solid and solid stains, including pressure-treated southern yellow pine or cedar. Wood alternatives called “composite decking” are also a popular choice. Although often marketed as maintenance-free, composite decking requires protection from discoloration and the elements. Arborcoat Solid Deck & Siding Stain offers excellent color retention for these popular decking options.

Visually—but subtly—merge the interior and exterior from your interior’s color palette. Or use a combination of colors to indicate where one part of your deck begins and another ends.
