To save money, you can use a 4 (31 1/2 inch) wide billy bookshelf instead of an 8 (15 3/4 inch) wide billy bookshelf for the same look.

Using a 2 by 4 and a hammer and nails, Jason made 2 platforms for Billy’s set of 4 bookshelves to help level the bookshelves and raise them up so we could install baseboards underneath them.
Step Three – Build and attach 2 (2 to 4) frames to the top and sides of the billy bookshelf.
Jason made 2 frames (2 by 4) to attach the tops of the 4 billy bookcases to secure them in position and to fill the gaps in the billy bookcases and roof. It also provides a nail base for trimming and crowning
He added 2-by-4s to the sides and back of Billy’s Ikea Hack wall unit to level the bookcase, give it stiffness for screwing in and give it more room to cut so it looks like a real built-in library wall unit.

Step 4 – Add pre-prime 1 through 6 to the top, sides and bottom of the billy bookshelf.
Jason cut to size and finished the top, bottom and sides of 2 sets of Billy Bookcase Hack wall units. In some places (see photos above and below) he had to add fill lines so that there were no gaps between the cut and the place where the cells were installed.

If your Billy bookshelf stays white, I don’t think it’s necessary to paint your bookshelf white.
We used Sherwin Williams Super Paint Un-Tinted Semi Gloss Extra White to paint the crown, baseboards, and trim, and it matched the IKEA Billy Bookcase Hack installed on the library cabinet and Oxburgh door.
We hung 8 oxford doors onto this Ikea Billy Bookshelf hack we made and topped it off with beautiful oil rubbed bronze glass knobs from Amazon that cost about $5!!!
Oxburgh doors definitely add character and old world charm to the Ikea Billy Bookcase Hack installed in the library cupboard.

I styled my new Ikea Billy Bookshelf hack mounted on a library wall unit with lots of books, baskets, glass jars, and DVD movies.
I gave them a farmhouse style by blending them together like colors and placing white and light colored books on top and darker black and blue books below the oxford glass doors.
My Ikea Billy Bookshelf Hack adds tons of storage to my living room, with lower cabinets for additional books, movies, puzzles, board games, and outdoor decor.
And… the best part about this Ikea Billy Bookshelf hack is that I don’t have to take this bookcase apart very often thanks to the oxford doors!!!
