First things first: True whites are not true whites. To understand this, one must understand LRV.

The Most Popular White Paint Colors

The Light Reflectance Value, or LRV, of any color is a number assigned based on the amount of light the color reflects, where 0 is completely black and 100 is pure white. The higher the number, the more light is reflected.

However, the white LRV 100 does not actually exist. Sherwin Williams High Reflective White (one of the brightest whites) is 93. Anything around 80 or higher is considered white, and “white” can be anywhere from ~70 to 80. So you have to ask yourself how bright ( LRV close to 90) or soft white (LRV close to 80) you want your white to be.

And as for “soft” white, the less bright the white, the more colors (or shades) are added to soften the bright white. A color is added to the “off-white” color:

First, you have to consider the style. In general, warm whites will help to create a cozy feeling and will work well in a more traditional room. Cool whites, on the other hand, can be crisp and more refined. Of course, this is a generalization, but a good starting point if you know you prefer a more classic or contemporary feel.

Secondly, you should consider the natural lighting of the room. A north-facing room (in the Northern Hemisphere) has slightly cooler light, while a south-facing room has warmer light. So if your room faces north, you will try to choose a warm white color to balance the cool natural light. And vice versa – for rooms facing south.

East- or west-facing rooms are tricky because the quality of light in those rooms will change throughout the day, but suffice it to say that sunset light entering a west-facing room can often be orange or pink. It can also be difficult if the light coming into your home is filtered by lots of trees or nearby buildings, which can reflect their colors into your home.

Finally, you need to experiment with the color in the room. White is especially sensitive to light, floor color, and other elements of the room… so I always test 2-3 colors before committing. It’s worth the extra effort!

As I said, it is very important to test the color shade in your actual room, especially white colors. I’ve never had a problem with the paint swatches on all the walls, but I understand that it can be difficult at times. And given today’s challenges of obtaining color swatches, I’m happy to share a better alternative.

Sampleize will send you reusable skins and stickers made from real paint. This allows you to move the sample around the room to capture different lights. I hope you find this tool as useful as I did!

After years of painting my own homes and helping clients paint their own homes, these are now my go-to white paint colors.

It is the choice of many interior designers. It is a soft timeless white (LRV 82) with a very subtle creaminess. But unlike many white cream colors, the undertone is more beige or green than yellow. It creates a beautiful, elegant space that still feels comfortable. It has a lot in common with Benjamin Moore Swiss Coffee.

A white tone similar to Alabaster, but with less yellow undertones (so little, honestly, my husband swears they look the same 😉 ), Silos White is also nice and warm, but not too warm for a more contemporary or modern look. Country house style.

Cloud White Color Review (oc 130)

One of my favorite shades of white, White Duck is a creamy and soft white. It still follows in shades of beige rather than true yellow, creating a solid warm neutral. With an LRV of 73, it’s a great choice for white exterior paint colors because it doesn’t shine in the sun as much as with a higher LRV. Exterior paint colors are generally lighter than interior colors. As an interior color, it’s darker than the one below, but still soft and rich.

More gray than White Duck, Aesthetic White is a great choice if you want soft white walls that don’t read warm. The white aesthetic isn’t cold either, but it’s actually a light gray, and it’s a great choice when colored light is pouring into a room. For example, in our last house, our bedroom had only one window facing the red brick house. Most of the light from this window bounced off the neighbor’s house and cast a strange pink color across the room. Ash absorbs a lot of light, and the neutral undertones keep the room pink or purple.

All the bedrooms and bathrooms in my house are Behr Cameo White – I’m not sure I can come up with a better recommendation! 🙂 Behr white is my favorite of the colors, it’s a beautiful light gray and goes especially well with Carrara marble (one of my favorite materials). It’s not too cold though and it sounds like a real soft white with the LRV 81.

Like Cameo White, Snowbound is on the cool side and looks a true, bright white on walls. However, with the 83’s LRV, it’s soft and elegant enough to let the furniture and artwork do their thing.

Such a list would not be complete without a few honorable mentions. My other Sherwin Williams white paint colors are Sherwin-Williams Pure White (SW 7005) and Extra White (SW 7006).

Pure White, with an LRV of 84, is slightly softer than Extra White, which has an LRV of 86. Pure White also has a warm touch. However, both are great cabinet and trim colors and can blend well with your white walls (eg: pure white trim with soft, alabaster walls) or provide a brighter contrast (eg, complementary white trim with solid gray walls). Read more about painting the white finish (and gloss options) here.

If you’re looking for bright white, SW High Reflective White, Benjamin Moore Simply White, or Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace are good choices. Simply White has a hotter signal than the other two, but with LRVs of 91 to 93, these three are some of the brightest options available.

As for Benjamin Moore whites, White Dove with LRV 85 is similar in brightness to SW Pure White, but slightly warmer. And Decorator’s White LRV is 84 (similar to SW Extra White) with a distinct cool taste.

I mean, have you ever painted a room white, hoping for a nice, bright space, only to end up looking dull and yellow? Or maybe even a little purple or pink instead of bright white?

This is because not all shades of white are created equal. Paint colors are always influenced by their undertones, room lighting and other colors around them.

First things first. You may be reading this post wondering if white will work in your home even for your lifestyle. You may have small children or large dogs that make breathing difficult.

If you’re reading this and the thought of white walls gives you hives or a panic attack, don’t. Do not paint the walls white. Your peace of mind is not worth messing with. Wait until your kids get older or your dog gets less messy.

Although the paint has come a long way in the last decade in terms of durability and cleanliness, it is still white and will show dirt faster than darker colors. (With a darker color, the walls will still be dirty, you just won’t be able to see it as quickly or easily.)

But if you like white walls and want to do a little scrubbing or cleaning with a magic eraser if necessary,
