12 X 16 Pergola Plans – This step-by-step woodworking project is about how to build a 12×16 rectangular gazebo – free DIY plans. This rectangular gazebo is the perfect addition to your patio as it will provide enough shade for a table and a few chairs. I recommend building this next to a brick oven or grill. This structure requires a lot of work, but please follow building codes and hire a professional contractor if you don’t have the skills to do the project yourself.
We recommend investing in the best materials you can afford. Therefore, you should buy weather-resistant wood such as pressure-treated wood, cedar or redwood. If you are using regular pine, I recommend using the appropriate products to improve durability. Always take accurate measurements before dimensioning the components to the correct size. Drill pilot holes in the components before inserting the wood screws to prevent the wood from splitting. See all my premium plans HERE.

The first step in the project is the arrangement of the rectangular pavilion. Therefore, carefully choose the location of the gazebo and the level of the surface. Be sure to remove the vegetation layer and level the surface. Use battery frames and twine to lay the foundation. Apply the 3-4-5 rule to each corner to ensure they are square. Measure the diagonals and make adjustments so they are equal.

After you have marked the location of the posts, dig 2-3′ deep holes in the ground using a post digger. Install the pipe form and put the pins in place, making sure they are perfectly vertical. Secure the 6×6 posts with braces before filling the molds with concrete.
Use 6×6 lumber for the top boards. As you can easily see in the diagram, you need to make notches on both ends of the beams using a circular saw. Make the middle tooth in the side plates using a saw and a chisel. Make parallel cuts and remove the excess with a hammer and chisel. Smooth out the depressions with sandpaper.
Place the boards on the sides of the pavilion. Center the boards on the studs, making sure you have a 12-inch bracket on both sides. Drill pilot holes and insert 8″ screws to lock them in place. Dip the posts with a spirit level and check that the top plate is completely horizontal. Make sure the corners are square.
Place the rest of the board on top of the pavilion. Drill pilot holes and insert 8″ screws to hold it all together tightly.

Build pavilion corners from 6×6 lumber. Make a 45-degree cut on both ends of the braces and fasten securely with 4 1/2″ screws. Countersink the posts and check that the boards are completely horizontal.
Use 6×6 lumber for back beam and supports. Center the supports on top of the slabs and lock them in place with the post and beam connectors. Place the back beam on top of the posts and the post to the beam connection.
Use 2×6 lumber for the rafters. Make 26.5 degree cuts at both ends of the rafter and then make bird cuts as shown in the diagram.
Mount the rafters at the top of the pavilion. Use the information in the chart to place the rafters every 16 inches on center. Use rafter straps and 1 1/2-inch structural screws/nails to attach the rafters to the support beams and back beam.
Simple Diy Pergola Plans
Use 1/2 inch plywood for the roof boards. Make cuts in the boards and place them on top of the roof structure. Leave no gaps between the sheets and line everything up carefully. Drill pilot holes and insert 1 5/8″ screws every 8″ on the frame.
Use 1×8 lumber to frame the roofs. Line up the glued edges and drive 2″ nails to attach them to the ends of the rafters.
Use 1×8 lumber for the front and back roofing. Make a 26.5 degree cut at both ends of the ornament. Attach the trim to the rafters and drive in 2-inch nails to lock them in place.
You can install asphalt shingles to protect the pavilion as it is a simple solution. Therefore, install roofing felt over the roofing sheets, making sure the strips overlap by at least 2 inches. Attach the tar paper to the plywood sheets with roofing staples. Fit the side drip corners to the felt roof, while the bottom drip corners must fit underneath. Place a course starting at the bottom of the roof before installing the asphalt shingles. Always read the manufacturing instructions before starting the installation as there are many different aspects.

The first course must start with a meal of 3 meals, the second with a meal of 2 1/2, the third with a meal of 2, the fourth with a meal of 1 1/2, the fifth with a meal of 1 , sixth course and a 1/2 meal. Repeat the process from the beginning, starting with the seventh course. Remember that the shingles should extend beyond the drip edge by about 1/4 inch. Also fasten the asphalt shingles to the roof deck with battens.
This pavilion is built on a solid 6×6 frame and has a roof with a pitch of 6:12. You can adjust the pitch of the roof according to your needs.
Last but not least, take care of the finishes. Therefore, fill the holes with wooden putty and then smooth the surface with paper. Apply several coats of paint or stain to the components to improve the appearance of the sink and protect the components from decay.

Easy plan to follow. I adjusted them a bit to use standard American lumber dimensions (12 feet by 16 feet), but that was easy to do with the illustrations. Our new gazebo looks great!
