Benjamin Moore Classic French Gray – Last year I started a tradition where I highlight my favorite colors in paint companies’ color forecasts for the coming year. More than any other design/color forecast, I look forward to the color forecasts from the paint companies themselves, as they are the most accurate indicators of paint color trends. Several paint companies have recently released their predictions for 2014, and today I thought I’d share some of my favorites from the entire collection.
** By the way, every room featured in this post is one of the paint colors in the 2014 paint forecast. The paint color names are right below each picture for you.

Paint companies often base their forecasts on the current best-selling paint colors and what customers buy and paint on their walls. The best part is that paint companies have programs to track even the smallest changes in tones when we buy one paint color and switch from other colors. Combining this information allows paint companies to tell us exactly where we are going with paint color. I love this information because it’s “real time” and what’s happening today because it’s based on current consumer paint trends.

When I saw Benjamin Moore and Sherwin Williams’ predictions for 2014, I was really surprised. I think they made it big and I’m excited to see some new colors.
Benjamin Moore and Sherwin Williams highlighted the same keywords that describe the 2014 forecast; calm, quiet and simple, and I believe what I’ve seen from readers lately is why many of you are looking for a calm, rich neutral with really deep but simple wall colors. However, I am not surprised because we all like to choose colors, patterns and finishes for our furniture and choose accent pieces instead of walls. We need muted wall colors to complement all the fun with bold patterns and colors.
So some of these predicted colors you may have seen before, and some of the colors are good new indicators of where paint companies are going with their color palette. I wasn’t surprised to see that Palladian Blue by Benjamin Moore was included in the forecast for 2014. This was probably the #1 color featured here on the blog last year and everyone who used it absolutely loved it.
That said, I’ve never made design or paint color decisions based on trends or forecasts. However, knowing what trends and colors are popular in paint and where paint colors are going is great information as it is a good starting point when looking for colors that will last a while.
My 2017 Paint Palette
This year I’m choosing just two color trends to show (Benjamin Moore and Sherwin Williams). Not all paint companies have announced forecasts yet, but more will be coming soon. Keep in mind that there are a lot of colors in each forecast set and I’ve picked some of my favorite muted/neutral colors.
I absolutely love every color in the Sherwin Williams Color Forecast 2014. I especially loved the colors in the “Why” section of the forecast. They just nailed it though, and I think Sherwin Williams summed it up here in 2014:
When these colors are calm, quiet and simple, they are deeply rich. Quiet, simple and clean is hard to find. Although the colors “look” simple, they are very complex with deep and hidden layers. The Sherwin Williams Color Forecast for 2014 can be found here.
Benjamin Moore Color Trends 2014 comes out with “The New Neutral Palette”. They’ve come out with a few sets in the past, but all I’ve seen is this little set. This is absolutely amazing:
Little House On The Corner: Home Exterior Painting Decisions: A Gray Area (part Iii)
To see all the color combinations and read about Benjamin Moore’s New Neutral Palette, you can find it here.
There are a lot of colors I like in both sets, and I can’t wait to see what other paint companies share when the forecast comes out. As they appear, I can single them out as well.
So I looked at Sherwin Williams and Benjamin Moore projections and came up with my favorite color palette:
I love all of these colors and have my eye on Van Deusen Blue and Crushed Ice for a spot in my home. Are there any colors that stand out to you? I’d love to know which ones you like and what you think of the planned colors!

), but how do you choose this gray? Warm gray, cold gray, blue-gray, gray-gray, green-gray – the wing of hell! Thank goodness you have your personal make-up in your back pocket (and don’t worry, it won’t rub off…unless you ask nicely).
Today we’re going to look at three of the best gray paint colors for cabinets and counter space. There are many more I want to explore with you, but these four are a great place to start your search…
My Favorite Paint Colors: Go To Grays — A Layered Life
Amherst Gray is a solid, neutral charcoal paint color with an LRV of 17, so it has weight behind it.
Like any gray, Amherst Gray takes in and takes on its environment. But overall, it looks like a nice, neutral charcoal paint color without the blue tint that is common in many grays today. However, it can sometimes take a week to turn green.
The image below shows how Amherst Gray can look neutral, but don’t be fooled, it often takes on more green than that…

Metropolis is for those who want a slightly softer and warmer approach to painting their clothing. I wouldn’t go so far as to say that Metropolis is a SUPER warm gray, but it’s definitely warmer and more taupey (taupey isn’t a real word) than Amherst Gray. Metropolis has 23 LRVs.

No doubt you’ll be hitting the road for a paint swatch in the near future – stay tuned! I want you to check SAMPLIZE. Samplize offers paint samples that are cheaper, lighter and more environmentally friendly than traditional paint bottles. Here are some reasons why I recommend Samplice to customers.
Sure, it says ‘grey’, but it’s more of a shade between gray and beige than anything else – slightly favoring the warm side of things.

If you are looking for a hot tool, this might work well for you. Kingsport Gray acts as a “neutral” with more warmth and softness than the previous options.
Kingsport Gray is shown below with a Formica top (affordable). A subtle and delicate way to moderate the space, giving it a personality.
