It definitely felt like it took the most time… it was a lot more work than we thought it would be – there was a lot of preparation and a lot of photos involved! The house had five layers of wallpaper on each wall, and even with help it took years to come off. Then we had to re-plaster all the walls, install another cabinet to the right of the fireplace, find new flooring, paint (I had between 12 different colors) and then deliver it! With all of that said, I’m very happy with the end result and I hope you are too!
Ud2451 Paul & Cherie — Utopia Kitchens, The Bespoke Kitchen Co
I can’t find any “before” photos of mine, so you’ll have to deal with these awesome real estate agents..
The fire surround was one that my dad was able to salvage from a job he was working on, and the cast iron stove was £24 – what a bargain! If I could scale up the circuit it would be a functional fireplace, but I don’t think I would actually use it, fireplace work is usually too expensive, so we decided to keep it aesthetic only.
The wall paint color matched Farrow & Ball’s Mizzle color from the local paint store, cheaper and better coverage if I’m being honest! As I mentioned earlier, I narrowed down my selection to 12 shades. They all look the same grey/green, but I wouldn’t say any of them are perfect, and I didn’t even know my mouth until I was on the wall. Though impossible to photograph, I just love the color!
I painted the new built-in wardrobe/shelves and built-in wardrobe the same color as the walls, which completely changed the feel of the room and made it feel more luxurious and ‘special’. Above the picture rails, roof, doors and skirt panels are various paint brand “Gloss White”.
The Big Reveal: Nine New Colors From Farrow & Ball
The latest additions to the room are a large round mirror from JYSK – an absolute nightmare that keeps selling out and you can only buy it in the store – and a pendant light shade from Donelm. I really struggled to find a foolproof invisible light that went with the style of the house, b. Hanging from such a high ceiling – I think this is a great option, it retails for £31.50. Much cheaper than what I’m seeing, the black and brass details go perfectly with the rest of the room.
We… Dad… made a closet in the empty closet so that I would have extra storage space and room for my TV. I designed this behind a piece of wallpaper…professional, I know, so I had an internal table to which I could attach the Sky+ box and other TV related equipment, and the TV itself would sit on it . Closet – I’m really happy with how it turned out – Nice job, Dad! Doorknobs from Zara was a Boxing Day sale for me. Mine are sold online (I know they must be in the Leeds store!) so I’ve linked their amazing door furniture.
You may recognize this little piece from a previous blog post — the table and lamp were gifted as part of a campaign with The Room, and I’m honestly still in love with them.
My floor is a straight wood floor, Peterson Oak – I love how the dark wood looks against the green/grey walls and bright white skirting. I’ve never seen darker wood before, and yes it looks better, but it also means I force myself to vacuum more!
Farrow & Ball Paint
After much searching, I decided on the Stanley rug from IKEA – it’s only £60, the size (170cm x 240cm) and goes very well with the rest of the house. I had planned on getting a mattress from La Redoute, but after realizing how easily it marks carpets and rugs (especially with a sick cat), I thought a deeper, lower pile option would be best for me.
Now, this part of the room isn’t done yet and I still need to make some cushions for my old Ercole chair, but I drew fabric on some throw pillows so you can see how it will turn out. Finally. – I hope it works…
The side table was a very generous gift from the lovely folks at Barker & Stonehouse when I told them I was renovating and decorating a bedroom. It is called ‘Lalit’ and has wonderful green marble. My search for the perfect side table turned out to be nothing but what I found, and I am so grateful to Barker & Stonehouse for making my side table dreams come true. It’s the tallest height next to the chair and really completes the room, just what I was hoping for!
To the left of the fireplace chest are already built-in shelves and a closet (full of shoes, if you’re interested!), which gave us the idea to build something similar on the opposite side. I basically threw away every little snack, bowl, and candle I could find
