Before we get into the colors, let’s talk technical, shall we? Paint has something called a Light Reflectance Value or LRV. One thing that can help you determine the best black for your room is to consider the Light Reflectance Value or LRV number.
The Light Reflectance Value (LRV) of a paint measures the amount of visible and usable light that reflects (or reflects) the painted surface. Simply put, LRV measures the amount of light that reflects a color. -Diamond Vogel
On a scale of 0-100, true black is zero and pure white is 100. So the closer you are to 0, the darker the color and the farther you are from 0, the more white is added to black.

This one is often recommended because it is the perfect dark gray shade. It’s more like hot coal than jet black. Soot is a rich black with cool blue undertones. It makes a statement on its own, but pairs perfectly with white as a pop of color. It’s cool black.
Personal Test We tried Soot in our shed, but it was too blue for us and didn’t work for our painting project.
Ebony Field is a rich deep black with a charcoal finish and looks great outdoors. One of our Instagram followers suggested we try this style and we did.

The night is more of a blackish gray that takes on the color of the night sky. This one looks great with the warmer woods.
Personal Test We tested Nightfall in our warehouse, but it was too light to get the overall look we wanted.
I couldn’t try Black Beauty after trying eight shades. It is very similar to Onyx but less dark because it has a higher LVR. It is a beautiful black and fades to black.
This black paint is a competitor of BM Black Beauty and Onyx. Black Tricorn is a neutral color without any color! It is for all intents and purposes and just beautiful. This color is pure, subtle and unmatched.

This black color is loaded with depth and character. Peppercorn is a brighter color because it is on the LVR 10 scale; This is the second lightest black on the list. If you’re looking for a brighter black, the color is beautiful inside and out.
Iron Ore is similar to BM Wrought Iron so we tried it. It is a tried and true color and widely used indoors and outdoors. It’s a dark, blue, gray paint color that I really like.
Kendall Charcoal HC166 is a versatile liner that works well with most color schemes. It can feel green or gray in different lighting and to me it looks like a chameleon and changes color with different lighting situations. The color is rich and deep without being too dark as it is the lightest shade in our range in this post. Kendall Charcoal is a great color and was in our dining room when we moved into our house.
