When it comes to cream paint colors, few are as disturbing as Sherwin Williams Antique White. The thing is, as a wall color, it’s beautiful, but too often it’s used on kitchen cabinets or trim and that’s where the problem begins.

To show you real, relevant homes, I only use online color consulting client photos. This means that I don’t always have the quality or set of photos I need, but there is definitely very useful information to help you on your way!
It’s actually a yellow shade with a neutral base added to calm it down. Along with this neutral base, you can take in shades of orange, red (pink), or even a hint of green; We’ll see what Antique White has in a bit.
If you have a north-facing room, Antique White can be a great way to balance out some cool natural light (it works well for east-facing rooms, too). If your room faces south or there’s afternoon sun from the west, Antique White will bask more in its warmth, without seeming like an overabundance of daylight.
Antique Cream has an LRV of 72, which can be a great depth for your walls if you want a cream with a bit more body than some other popular cream paint colors. However, it is not so deep that it looks heavy or old.

However, LRV Antique White is one reason it’s not an ideal color for inlays or cabinets. The “average” LRV for cabinet paint and trim is 82-94. With an LRV of 72, you’re looking at a color that’s far from white and even on the edge of the white range, teetering on the edge of the “light” range. 1. As a cabinet or trim color, you’ll naturally want to partner with colors that are at least a shade or two darker than they are, which is often darker than you’ll want to go when painting more than one room or want to. To update cream cabinets or trim them in a more modern wall color.
Antique white cabinets (or trim) should not be mixed with colors that are the same depth or lighter.
2. The antique white in the depth makes it appear richer and warmer than the usual trim and cabinet colors, which makes it more limited to the kind of paint color you want around you (especially in terms of cooler colors than it), which we’ll get into shortly.
How To Glaze Cabinets
In the photo below, you’ll see the antique white finish on the kitchen island along with the trim work. While it pairs well with a stone fireplace, notice how much cream it looks in comparison to the colors of the travertine tile floor (limestone is usually orange and pink). I mean, the combo is doable, but it’s a little strong.
In the example above, my E-Design client was already looking for a new WALL color and didn’t want to change the trim (which makes sense when running on a whole house). I gave it some new wall color options as well as some suggestions for the kitchen island just to at least lower the amount of antique white in the space.

Antique White is a cream paint color that centers on the yellow/base color. Some creams may have a slightly yellow-orange or yellow-green tip. Old White leans slightly towards the yellow-orange, but not by much.

In the photo below, you can see the power of antique white in these painted cabinets. My clients hired me to find a new cabinet color since the antique white cabinets clashed with the colors of the travertine tile backsplash (again, orange and pink travertine works well, not yellow).
This depends on your perception. Antique white will definitely look yellowish, but whether or not you personally find it too strong is up to you. As an online color consultant, I’ve enhanced yellow with old white, making it as challenging as trim or cabinet color.
Some cream paint colors have a stronger neutral base. The more neutral the color, the looser it feels, and the antique white has more of a nod to color than I’d like.

As warm as antique white is, it’s best to associate it with a white that has a fair amount of warmth to it, rather than a clean or cool white paint color.
By the way, Alabaster White is a more versatile one if you want to change up your wall color in the future — Dover White is more limited.

Ah, there it is – the golden question (literally). With Antique White’s more gold approach and a below-average LRV (in terms of trim/cabinets), Antique White is a slightly picky eater. But as long as you follow a few rules, you should get along!

Warm paint tones will help soften the antique white style as they blend in a bit more. Warm colors include cream, beige, and brown.

Cool paint colors will “bring out” the antique white and can enhance its warmth/yellow, making it look a little stronger. Cool colors include gray (and any of its shades), blue, green, and purple. This also includes gray, although it is considered a warm paint color.
Another helpful tip is to look for colors with an LRV of around 50 or less. There are very few light colors that will work (other than beige/cream with the same undertones as antique white). Do you need an LRV review? read this.

Personally, I would only consider the beige range because I think the cooler tones interact a lot with the antique white, which makes it very strong and the combination very opposite, but it’s just not me (not all the time anyway…)
