First: the color white is not true white. To understand this, you need to understand LRV.

The light reflectance value or LRV of any color is a number based on how much light it reflects, 0 being black and 100 being pure white. The higher the number, the brighter it is.
No white paint has an LRV of 100. Sherwin Williams High Reflective White (which is one of the brightest whites you can get) is 93. Almost anything over 80 is considered white, and “solid white” can be anywhere from ~ 70-80. So you have to ask yourself how bright (LRV closer to 90) or soft white (LRV closer to 80) you want your white to be.
Also, when it comes to “soft” whites, the lower the white, the more colors (lower) are added to soften the harsh whites. “White and white” colors have many additional colors:
First of all, you need to consider the style. In general, warm whites will help create a sense of comfort and go well with traditional spaces. Cool whites, on the other hand, have a brighter, more modern style. Of course, these are general, but if you prefer a classic or modern style, it’s a good place to start.

Second, you should consider the natural light of the room. North-facing rooms (at least in the northern hemisphere) have slightly cooler light, while south-facing rooms have warmer light. So, if your room faces north, you’ll want to choose a slightly warmer white color to balance out the cooler natural light. And vice versa for the south rooms.
East- or west-facing rooms are tricky because the quality of light in those rooms changes throughout the day, but suffice it to say that sunset light in a west-facing room is usually orange or pink. It can also be difficult if the light entering your home is filtered by the many shadows of trees or nearby buildings that reflect color back into your home.
Finally, you should experiment with the color in the space. The white color is very sensitive to the color of the light, the floor and other elements of the space… That’s why I try 2-3 colors before doing it. It’s worth the extra effort!
As I said, experimenting with color shades in your space is very important, especially with white. I’ve never had a problem with paint colors on my walls, but I understand it can be annoying at times. Paint swatches are hard to come by these days, so I’m happy to share a better option.

After years of painting my house and helping clients paint their homes, these are my favorite white colors.
It is a favorite of many interior designers. It is a soft, pristine white (LRV 82) with a very fine creamy texture. But unlike many shades of white, the undertones are more beige or gray than yellow. It creates a comfortable and elegant atmosphere. It has a lot in common with Benjamin Moore’s Swiss Coffee.
The white is very similar to Alabaster, but with a little less yellow (very little, honestly, my husband swears it’s the same 😉 ), Silos White is beautiful and comfortable without being too modern or warm for a more modern person . farmhouse style.
Best True White Paint Colors With No Undertones
Duck White, one of my favorite warm whites, is a creamy, soft white. It is still yellow, not true yellow, which makes it heat neutral. With an LRV of 73, it’s a great choice for a white exterior color because it shines in the sun just like something with a higher LRV. Exterior paint colors tend to read lighter than the interior. As for the tones, it’s darker underneath, but still smooth and rich.
Aesthetic White is a good choice if you want soft white walls that are more gray than white, rather than warm. While Aesthetic White isn’t cool, it is a much lighter gray and is a good choice if you want colored light to enter the space. For example, in our last house, our bedroom had a window that looked into the brick house. Most of the light coming through this window reflected off the house next door, casting a strange purple color throughout the room. White absorbs enough light, while neutral colors don’t make the room look pink or purple.
All the rooms and bathrooms in my house are Behr Cameo White – I sure couldn’t recommend it better! 🙂 Burr’s favorite white color is light gray and it goes especially well with Carrara marble (one of my favorite materials). It is not too cold and has a real soft white with LRV 81.
Very similar to Cameo White, Snowbound is on the cool side and looks mostly white and bright on the wall. Like the LRV 83, it’s soft and elegant enough to illuminate furniture and artwork.
The Best White Paint Colors
Such a list would be incomplete without a few honorable mentions. Other Sherwin Williams white paint colors are Sherwin-Williams Pure White (SW 7005) and Extra White (SW 7006).
Pure White with LRV 84 is slightly softer than Extra White with LRV 86. Pure White is warmer. Both cabinet and trim colors work very well and can blend well with white walls (eg clean white trim with soft alabaster walls) or provide a sharper contrast (eg complementary white trim with matching gray walls). If you’re looking for a bright white, SW High Reflective White, Benjamin Moore Simply White, or Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace are good choices. Simply White is warmer than the other two, but with a 91-93 LRV, these three are among the best options.
Speaking of Benjamin Moore whites, White Dove with LRV 85 is similar to SW Pure White, but slightly warmer. Also, Decorator’s White is an 84 LRV (very similar to SW Extra White) and has its own distinct flavor.
