Best Way To Paint Garage Floor – I have had so much success with other Rust-Oleum products that I am happy to use the garage kit.
A beautifully organized garage is the stuff of my OCD dreams! But no matter where it’s finished, the floors can make the biggest difference in the overall feel of the room. The garage is no different! I recently went through the process of refinishing a garage floor with Rust-Oleum’s RockSolid Garage Kit (with dark gray paint) and I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out. I’ll share my experience with a few dos and don’ts so you can tackle this project with confidence.
Best Way To Paint Garage Floor
There are many reasons to cover the floor. The most obvious is the beauty it offers, but it also provides good protection. Here is a short list of reasons why covering your garage floor is a success!
Epoxy Paint Garage Floor
Cleaning out the entire garage seemed a bit overwhelming… I decided to try one page at a time to make this first step easier. It usually takes a few days to break this process, but it takes some pressure! I took this picture after finishing the second part. I was able to store all my “stuff” in the garage and access it that way.
The first step to a successful project is developing a plan to ensure you start with a clean and well-prepared floor. As with any project, PREP is the key to long-term results.
After cleaning half the garage, I hosed down the entire area to remove most of the dirt. (Thank God!
I warn you, cleaning is actually the hardest part of this project. I was sweating, but with all my painting experience I knew I shouldn’t take any shortcuts in this step.
How Can I Paint My Garage Floor?
Next came Concrete Handling. Concrete can be too hard and slippery to accept paint or protective fillers…that’s where cutting comes in. The main ingredient is citric acid, which serves to open the pores in the concrete and prepare the surface for further treatment. I mixed the ammunition according to the instructions in an old flower pot and poured it into the clean concrete. I left it on for a few minutes and then gave it another light scrub. The etching itself will do most of the work.
I made sure to hose down the area again and remove all floor coverings. Using the syrup really helped to dry most of the water off the concrete…which is important before moving on to the actual covering of the floor.
My advice here is to wait at least 24 hours. I can guarantee you that if your floor is not completely dry and above 50 degrees, you will not get the results you want. I used a surface thermometer to make sure my concrete was the right temperature.
Here comes the fun part… and I have strong ideas on how to blend/paint for best results. I noticed that some of the bags are slightly different in color, so in the picture above you can see that I mixed up 2 bags. This will give you the best chance of getting good, consistent colors throughout. I also noticed that the recommended brush on the edges gave an uneven finish.

I chose to paint the entire floor with a paint tray (I didn’t use any brushes). The instructions also recommend pouring from a bag… I haven’t found anything effective at all that leaves a hard finish.
Note: You will need to glue the corners if you don’t plan to cover them with boards like I did.
Once you’ve rolled a 3-4′ tile, it’s time to discard the scraps! It is important to do this while they are still wet and you can get to where you are going to throw them. My technique was to throw them in the air and let them fall randomly! If the paint chips don’t look the way you want, skip this step (I would do a lot) – it won’t affect the performance of the coating.
There are many different opinions about how long a jacket should be worn. I think one good coating is enough.

I waited 24 hours and tested the sticky spots before moving on to the top coat. I use a textured white coat with Rustoleum anti-slip. I followed the same steps as the coating and just mixed in some additives…remember to mix as you paint as it will set a bit. It’s almost like sand, so it’s important to keep stirring to spread it evenly.
To give it a proper finished look, I decided to add the PVC board after the final coat. I can’t believe how different they are!
What’s the difference, right? If you want to remember the main points of this project, here are some important points.
I am very happy with the final result of the floor, but I can say that I would have added more pieces and used a gloss top coat as opposed to matte. I may still do it in the spring/summer. Plus, I’ve worked out all the considerations for you in this project so you can decorate your garage floors with confidence!

BONUS: Floor coverings like these reduce temperature fluctuations. Concrete floors and terraces become noticeably warmer in winter, and concrete floors do not heat up in the summer sun.
Having used and tested several products over the years, an epoxy based coating is the most durable option. I haven’t tried all the products on the market (some cost thousands of dollars!), but here are some tips to start your research:
We use our garage as a wood shop, so Behr Granite Grip was the perfect choice for us. For example, if I ran a car repair shop, I would go for a professional evaluation. You can also add texturizing epoxy to reduce slippage, which was a big problem for us.

If your concrete floor collects moisture, it can leak under the coating and you won’t have a proper warranty. Cut a few meters of clear plastic and lay it on the ground. Use thin tape or other tape that is well sealed around all edges. I recommend going out for a day or two and regularly checking the floor or bottom of the plastic for moisture, discoloration or condensation.
If that fails, I would definitely consult an expert to find the source and what you can do about it.
Finding a place to store everything in the garage can be the biggest challenge. This whole process takes several days, so I recommend doing everything at once. Our chair is built into the wall so we left it.
Be sure to remove oil, dirt or small amounts of paint from the floor. This is very important for a correct connection. Use a good cleaning agent and a long-handled scrub brush to remove dirt.
