Can I Paint Kitchen Cabinets Without Sanding – This position has been reported many times. As you probably already know, we have been remodeling our kitchen for several weeks. Since we moved, we wanted to paint the cabinets. We left the upper cabinets white, but decided to paint the lower cabinets and Behr pantry/coffee maker. We did a LOT of research before embarking on this project. We wanted to work smart. Sanding is very difficult, but luckily we painted the cabinets WITHOUT sanding. The step-by-step process is described below.
Image. As we said, we chose the color Muted Sage by Behr. In particular, we chose a semi-gloss cabinet interior and an enamel finish. It’s a great color that completely transforms a space.

Gloss remover. This changes the rules of the game. You don’t need sand when you have this product. We did a lot of research and found this one to have the best reviews – Jasco Easy Liquid Sander Deglosser. Really, these things are magical. Works on almost everything.
Painting Melamine Or Laminate Cabinets Without A Paint Sprayer
Paint sprayer. We used spray paint for the doors and drawers. It really made everything so easy. This also ensured even paint application. This is the one we used – REXBETI sprayer.
Brushes and rollers. We didn’t use spray paint on the base of the cabinets because we weren’t sure we could wipe everything down in the house. We tested several different rollers and brushes to see which worked best. We have found that the velor roller leaves the best finish. In addition, the angled brushes help you get into crevices and make life a lot easier.
First step. First of all, prepare the cabinets. Remove all doors and drawers. Use sandwich bags to hold each set of screws/hinges together. It will make your life much easier. After removing everything, we recommend a quick clean of the cabinets to ensure that all dust has been removed. Once you’ve done that, it’s time to unlock. It is very easy. For safety reasons, we recommend wearing gloves. You can just use a cloth or sponge and start wiping the liquid around the cabinets. There is no need to wash up. Make sure you cover every inch of the cabinet. It only takes about 10 minutes to dry and you’ll be ready to go.
Step two. Now that everything is cleaned and prepared, it’s time to paint. We used spray paint for the doors and drawers and rollers/brushes for the cabinet base. Let’s start with the door. The doors were placed on paper cups so that the sides were open. This ensured we were hitting the sides with every pass of the sprayer. We recommend making two rows on each side of the door – allow 1-2 hours to dry between them. After painting everything, we recommend letting everything dry overnight. This ensures that everything hardens.

A contractor once told me it was almost as expensive as buying new cabinets! WHAT! Surely more than one person has confirmed this claim, so I figured it must be true. In fact, having your laminate kitchen cabinets repainted with paint can be very costly. That’s why I decided to do this project myself. In short, if you use a good bonding primer, the type of paint will not last as long as a good latex, oil or performance paint.
How To Paint Rv Cabinets The Easy Way
For this project I use Zinsser Bulls Eye Primer with General Finishes Milk paint. Also, don’t forget to apply a good top coat or sealer.
I used Ace Hardware latex paint when I painted the rest of the laminate cabinets (no primer).
3. Clean the main cabinets thoroughly before laminating them. If there is a lot of dirt that doesn’t clean well, you need to use a “scrubber dryer” to make sure the entire surface is clean.
4. After cleaning the cabinets and making sure they are completely dry, apply one coat of primer.
How To Paint Laminate Cabinets
Below is a photo of cabinets with one layer of undercoat. Since the cabinets are laminate and the finish is a bit glossy, I thought two coats of primer would be necessary.
6. Now it’s time to paint. The photo above was taken after the first layer. I used a foam brush for this part to eliminate brushstrokes and still opted for three coats!
7. Then apply a top coat (don’t skip this step). For any surface that is used frequently, you should definitely use a topcoat. Since I used General Finishes milk paint, I also opted for their high performance water based satin finish.
My recommendation is to use polycrylate instead of polyurethane. Polyurethane topcoats are known to turn yellow over time (especially when applied to white cabinets). Milk paint topcoat sealer is very similar to polycrylate topcoat.

Do Your Kitchen Cabinets Look Tired?
I promise anyone can transform a boring kitchen with just a few coats of paint. You don’t have to be a professional painter to complete this project and I guarantee you won’t regret it!
Seriously, if I can make a cheap veneer decal look good in just a few layers, anyone can!
I liked the piece you did about painting laminate cabinets. It was very informative. The question is, can you make something white with chalk paint or regular latex paint? Do you know anyone who has ever cleaned laminate cabinets? Thanks again and hope to be back soon
A few years ago I made a video about creating a “faded” or “bleached” wood effect on a smooth laminate surface. https://youtu.be/UWoYg8_xp4U As for a true white laminate finish, that would be hard to do. My suggestion is to try chalk paint on a small area you normally don’t see and see if you like it. If this works, you’ll need to seal the chalk paint really well to make sure it lasts forever.
Should I Paint My Wood Cabinets Or Keep Them Stained? Questionnaire
They look great. I’m not a painter. I painted the inside of the laminate without using a primer. I have noticed that they scratch easily. What can I use to secure it from scratch. I’m so disgusted
Hey Elaine. I would use a polyacrylic topcoat or a topcoat that is definitely not yellow. Check out this post; https://how-to-seal-furniture-a-high-traffic-surface/
What technique to use with a foam brush? I’m currently painting the bathroom drawers and used a primer (2 coats) and applied thin coats of paint with a foam brush, sanding lightly between coats after drying, but it’s still very streaky! I love painting cabinets. . . well, i like the effect of painting the cabinets. Painting isn’t bad either, but I hate sanding cabinets beforehand. It’s a lot of work, but I always did (or used a chemical stripper) because I felt it was the only way to make sure the finish would stick to the cabinets. I’m not going to use abbreviations if that means the final product isn’t a quality and solid piece of work. However, in preparing our rental property, I finally decided to try a sand-free approach to simple oak kitchen cabinets and myself.
