Paint Your Fireplace, Mantle Or Surround With Chalk Paint®

Have you painted your fireplace? If so, please send examples to Trish ([email protected]). You can get free stuff!

Preparation: If you have a cleaner or a vacuum cleaner and its “broom”, go outside the brick facade and remove small cobwebs and dust. Not a big deal, but if you’re OCD like me, do it.

For a cooler look, pour some paint into another container and add about 25% water. So… 1 cup of paint… is 1/4 cup of water. 🙂 Do not dilute all colors from scratch!!! Start by mixing small parts and paint only one brick first. If you don’t like it, don’t be so keen to start in the middle of a brickyard. And be careful not to add too much water.

That said…bye brick red/orange…..hello fresh and contemporary! Watch Linda Crawford thin Annie Sloan®️ Old White Chalk Paint with a little water. No need for a top coat!

Debbie Ballo totally transformed this baby! Red Chalk Paint® Primer by Annie Sloan and Java Gel by General Finishes. Debbie Ballo used both to transform her fireplace surround. we love it! Debbie used Annie Sloan’s Clear Wax with Red Primer and Satin’s General Finish High Performance Top Coat with Java Gel. we love it!

Jasmine Hagan did a great job on the grill. He applied a black walnut stain to the pink brick and then used Old White Chalk Paint® thinned with water to remove the stain. The fabric was then painted with Duck Egg Blue Chalk Paint® and sealed with clear wax. Jasmine writes to us “No regrets!!!”

I used the original paint from Annie Sloan’s Chalk Paint® pack to paint the brick around the fireplace. He diluted his paint with water and used multiple “wash” techniques. He said they bought a heavy, dark, outdated house with a fireplace that didn’t serve our room. After playing around a bit with the ‘original’ chalk paint, I was very pleased with the results! A gas fireplace was added and the linens were done in a brighter white after the holidays.

Roxanne and her dog immediately applied Paris Gray Chalk Paint®. The pure white was then washed with water, and the graphite dissolved in water was washed again. I painted Paris Gray all over the fireplace and when dry I applied Graphite Wash to the stone ridges to intensify the color. I then used a pure white wash to remove as needed. Roxanne wrote:

Suzanne painted the plaster using Annie Sloan’s Old White Chalk Paint® mixed with water. The ratio is 3 parts water to 1 part paint. He dabbed on the paint and used paper towels to strategically remove it. Check out Suzanne’s blog here!

Eileen used a diluted version of AnnieSloan’s Chalk Color in Pure White and then Old White to soften the shine. Then rub it randomly to reveal the color and color of the brick. Now he likes it!

Good Mary! He used French Linen Chalk Paint® on the floor tiles, then washed with white and water (1 part each) on a dry French linen and quickly wiped off the excess. I used the same detergent on the brick stove.

Chalk Paint®️ Annie Sloan helped Andrew transform the parts of his home that he didn’t like. She was on the traditional red brick shown above and wanted to brighten up the space, so she used Annie Sloan Paris Gray Chalk Paint® throughout and used a color called Pure (white) on the ‘plain brick and separated the thick Paris Gray paint. Look at the front and back of the bricks around the wood stove.

The Differences Between Whitewash And Limewash Paint

Andrew first swept and cleaned the cracks in the brick to remove dust and debris. The soiling of the surrounding brickwork will determine the amount of cleaning. It also depends on how shiny the brick is, i.e. whether it was previously sealed or is flat without any sealant. Sealed bricks…and water. Be careful not to remove the oil seal by using harsh cleaners on the sealed brick. Rough and flat bricks are unsealed bricks and are difficult to clean because smoke, dirt and grime can easily enter through cracks and crevices.

If you use soap, keep in mind that wet bricks need several days to dry completely.

Annie Sloan used Annie Sloan Paris Gray Chalk Paint®️ and Annie Sloan Small Dome Top Paint Brush to paint around the brick. This paint brush is great for this type of application because the large bristle head works like a mop and can get into all areas of brick and grout lines.

Andrew then took his Pure Chalk Paint®, thinned it with a little water and selected certain bricks to lighten them for a more subtle effect. It made the look more interesting than at the time of Paris color.

Warwickshire traditional painter Ron Taylor had an interesting challenge with a ‘red’ brick fireplace. Over the decades, Ron has seen it all and it has more colors than most decorations. He has painted many kitchens and furniture and specializes in spray painting. In this case, the technical solution he created for the brick fireplace is Gardz and Annie Sloan Chalk Paint.

The client didn’t like the solid color, so I decided to use a colored wash. Die-cuts and false colors are useful tools when you want to add interest and depth to a solid surface.

Large furnaces were still in use, so the paint on the furnace soon became marked. Painting is therefore limited to the outer surface.

After cleaning the brick, I applied Zinser seagulls. It is a transparent water-based soluble sealer that prevents chalk paint from directly penetrating the brick. In the US it is very popular for sealing plasterboard before wallpapering and as a primer before painting. An excellent addition to the English painter’s arsenal when treating problem areas under pressure. Gardz information can be found on the TP website.

After the Gardz dried, I painted all the bricks with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint, Country Gray. One of the many benefits of Annie Sloan chalk paint is that it is opaque. It has excellent coverage. But I don’t want to end up flat, so it’s time to build up.

I wanted to define the edges of the brick, but the mortar was a little too thick on the face of the brick, so I had to warn the client that sanding would take time and ruin the finish.

One of the characteristics of chalk paint is that it needs a top coat for protection. What to do?
