Creating a color mixing chart is a way for artists to explore how colors interact with each other. How To Mix Colours When Painting In Acrylics
When you create a color mixing chart, you can mix each color with every other color. By doing this exercise you will be able to mix colors that you would never have thought of otherwise. So, this is a great way to find new color combinations and understand how colors work together!
Creating a color chart can also increase your confidence when it comes to mixing colors for painting. Usually, one knows the color they want, but has no idea how to measure it. But if you went through the process of mixing all your colors together. Then you will have a better idea of how to get the colors you need and the colors you get.
You can make mixed color cards with as few or as many colors as you like. Remember if you want to make a color chart by mixing 24 colors… you will mix 576 squares! Oh! The color chart below only has 7 colors so it’s a good start to the colors I use often.
To make the table above, I took a 9 x 12 piece of watercolor paper. How do I make this color chart in watercolor. You can also use watercolor paper if you paint colored cards with professional paint or gouache. Alternatively, you can also use watercolor paper for an oil paint mixing paper. Take a ruler and measure your colored card so that there is one square centimeter of space for each area. I also left an inch of space from the edge for the side and top edges where I marked the color names. I made each of my squares one inch, but you can make the squares as small or large as you like!
Mark each square on the left and top. You will mark the same color on each page in the same order – as shown in the example below.

You do this for each color separately. However, you will notice that you will make two sets of each color. So, every time you mix cadmium + ultramarine blue, you mix the second one on the other side of the spectrum.

If you are wondering how much of each color to put in the mixture, you always make 50% of each color. So when you mix ultramarine blue + cadmium yellow you mix 50% cadmium yellow + 50% ultramarine blue. That way, the color combination is the same.

Because it is not appropriate to mix the same colors twice in the same way. You will first make a light color combination, then a dark color. Look at the image below and notice how the left side of the color chart is lighter and the right side is darker.
Also, you have to put down the base colors three times. There is one horizontal line on the first top row of squares.
