If you’re looking for a darker vibe than white or beige, consider warm greige and light gray. Benjamin Moore’s Thunder is an excellent choice in this genre. With many other colors playing it, Thunder is versatile and easy to coordinate. You can spot the purple and green hints in it. Boasting warm, earthy vibes while remaining decidedly refined, Thunder is a light gray that works as a timeless exterior paint color.
A bit of a mismatch, Shou Sugi Ban is part of the James Hardie Dream Collection. If you’re thinking of trying fiber cement with a unique color, Shou Sugi Ban gives a home a bold character. The rich, dark finish is derived from the ancient Japanese practice of preserving wood by charring and finishing with natural oils.
The perfect mid-grey, Benjamin Moore’s Chelsea Gray is the epitome of sophistication. With immense depth, it works exceptionally well as an exterior color. Keep in mind that its LRV of 23 means it can be quite dim in shady environments.
One of our favorite dark grays is Benjamin Moore wort iron. With almost black gray on the rise, this anthracite gray is an increasingly fashionable color. A bold, saturated color that brings life to a home, it makes for a striking combination when used in contrast to lighter tones. It’s no surprise that we named Strong Iron as one of the trending exterior paint colors for 2021.

There’s a good reason pewter is a popular exterior paint color. James Hardie’s Aged Pewter is a warm and adaptable gray. Although it is considered neutral, it is full of personality and goes very well with beige and other grays. (See more of our favorite Hardie Board siding colors here.)
A light gray with warm undertones, Benjamin Moore’s Revere Pewter is a classic shade that exudes a sense of calm. As an exterior color, it will look warm on sunny mornings and then cloudy evenings. One of the most popular gray paint colors over the years, Revere Pewter is a “greige” that looks great on brick or siding. It’s also a great choice for accents like the shutters mentioned above.
The almost black trend is on the rise. Always deliciously dark, iron ore from Sherwin Williams is on trend. Soft with lighter shades that give a more natural feel, this is an ideal color for home exteriors. Iron Ore is a rich charcoal shade that can make a dramatic impression from the sidewalk. Additionally, a deep, shaded color can highlight different textures and levels in a home.
If you want to make a statement without drowning, Benjamin Moore’s Kendall Charcoal will do. A versatile neutral with a deep warmth in direct sunlight, it looks like dark greige. It contrasts well with other warm paint colors such as white, cream, taupe or beige. Kendall Charcoal is a rich deep shade with a strong natural base, with quite a dramatic dramatic effect when applied throughout the home.

The number one paint question I’ve received over the years has to do with choosing exterior paint colors, and it’s one of the hardest painting decisions you can make for your home. You want your home to have a beautiful finish and you don’t want to make color mistakes. If you follow my seven steps below, I promise you’ll be able to avoid common mistakes and make great-looking exterior paint color decisions! Stay with me on that!
The first thing you should do when deciding what color you want to paint the exterior of your home is to choose a color shade. When I say “ombre” I mean do you want a light, medium or dark body color in your home? At this point, you can’t consider anything other than deciding whether you want a light or white color, a medium or medium shade, or whether you want a dark color.
Exterior Gray Paint Colors
For most of you, choosing a tint is an easy, instant decision and you know right away whether you want a light or dark colored home. However, some of you may be indecisive and open to all nuances and need help making this decision. If you’re looking for inspiration on Pinterest exteriors to determine the shade that best suits your home, it will help you. For example, if you have a ranch-style home, search Pinterest for “ranch-style home exterior” to see different color options for inspiration.
Before you get too far with your color decision, you need to consider the color of your roof. If you have black or neutral gray, you don’t have to worry so much about color clash. Unfortunately I have a dark brown roof with slight red undertones so colors like green or blue undertones wouldn’t work for me and would clash. For those of you who have a red, beige, green or blue gray shade roof, you should definitely consider your roof color when choosing your exterior paint color scheme.
If you’re like me and have a dark brown roof with red undertone shingles, you’ll want to stick with a true neutral main body color to play your house safe. If you have gray-green or blue shingles, you have a little more freedom and can avoid a color clash if you choose a color that is neutral or contains a slight hint of your shingle color to match. Mix and complement and don’t struggle. If you have a black roof, you can do almost anything.
If your home has stone or brick, consider the strong undertones of your brick or stone. If your house is completely brick and you want to choose a trim color, I would match the lightest, medium or darkest color of the stone/brick and use that as the trim color.

If your home is not all brick/stone and is half stone/brick or you have brick/stone accents, you have more leeway with color choices for the exterior body color of your home. As long as your body color has the slightest hint of a brick/stone base color, you should have no problem with the interface. For example, if your brick has a warm undertone and you want to add gray to the body color of your home, choose a light warm gray instead of a cool gray. So the heat from the gray binds/mixes the new body color to the brick. Does it make sense?
Then, once you have considered the color of your roof and decided on the shade, you need to consider the effect of light on the exterior paint colors that oppose the choice of colors for the interior. I’ll save you a lot of time by saying that daylight/sunlight will make your exterior color noticeably colder/bluer.
