Revere Pewter Match Sherwin Williams – Sherwin Williams Anew Gray is one of my favorite grays! Come see our living room to see how Anew Gray looks in our home and how it compares to other similar grays.

Shortly after we bought our house, we painted our living room and dining room this dark gray, Sherwin Williams Keystone Gray. While I love this rich gray in our dining room, it was too dark in our living room, which gets little natural light. So after a few years of trying to live with it (and failing…) I decided to paint myself a light color. I narrowed it down to four final candidates,

And finally Sherwin Williams chose Anew Gray. I’m really happy with my color choices and I get a lot of questions about it when I share pictures of our living room, so I thought I’d share what I like about it and how it compares to other similar grays. Along the way, I’ll give you a little tour of our living room! (post contains affiliate links; full disclosure statement available)

Here It Is! A Palette For No Fail Paint Colors

I prefer gray over beige or gray because they are the perfect Goldilocks colors – beige tones add a little warmth, while the coolness of gray tones prevents colors from looking dull and muddy. Anew Gray is a medium gray tone with plenty of depth and richness without being too dark, which is exactly what I was looking for when choosing the color for our living room. Here’s a picture of it in our space – it really shows how Anew Gray can look different depending on the light it gets:

If you look closely at the painted areas that are very close to the floor, you can see the lower tones of purple – this is because it receives a lot of light from the window across the fireplace, and it is toned cooler because the window faces north. It looks like real gray on the wall and throughout the room. You can also see that in the more shadowy areas, like to the right of my dark cabinet, the color looks darker and richer.

If we look at the same place on another day, we can see that the color on the top of the walls still looks different than the bottom, but the color looks less gray because less natural light from the north came into the space that day. :

Apart from the purple color you see in a small part of our room with direct north light (which happens with all greys), I don’t see any obvious undertones with Anew Gray in normal light – just a good no-no. -light, not too dark neutral warm.

This space has come a long way since its inception! Do any of you remember what it was like back then?

On the wall opposite the fireplace is our window seat, which was one of Hope’s favorite places to hang out and get a bird’s eye view of what was going on outside – we sure miss that beautiful face:

It’s always very interesting to look back and see how far space has come – sometimes changes are so slow and gradual over time that you don’t see their impact until you go back to the beginning and see where things started. !

I painted Anew Gray over a flat surface of Sherwin Williams Duration Home Interior Latex paint. I use flat or matte paint (closer to flat but more resistant) on all the walls of our house because it hides imperfections on the wall better than bright paints and is much easier to fix. Paint shops often recommend using eggshell paint on walls because the high gloss makes it easier to clean the walls from fingerprints, dirt, etc. But I’ve found that when you rub something on the eggshell wall, it tends to emit light from the scraped area, making it obvious that you’ve cleaned the area. Also, if you want to renew the color after many years, the refinement is more visible with eggshell than with flat or matte colors.

Our living room decor is painted Benjamin Moore Cloud White with satin. There are many different whites that work well with Anew Grey, but my favorite is to use a warm white if you have a warm wall color. See my post on whites for the most popular warm whites, including two of my favorites, Benjamin Moore White Dove and Simply White.

If you’re thinking about using New Gray in your home, you’re probably up against a few similar ones, so I thought I’d compare New Gray to six other gray colors that people choose the most. (according to Google). For a real comparison, I bought samples of all six colors from Samplize, which sells 12″ x 12″ colored squares with adhesive backing. Here are all six of the New Gray Walls:

These are actual painted swatches (not computer generated colors like the color strips you pick up at the paint store) so they give you an accurate sense of color without the hassle of finding swatch boxes. You can find the New Samplize pattern in Gray.

Every time you decide on a paint color, you MUST test it in your room. It doesn’t matter if it’s in another room of your home where it looks great, if you’ve seen it at your friends place where it looks like the perfect color, or if someone tells you that a certain color “always works”. The light received in each room is different and can greatly affect the appearance of the paint color in that space.

You should not only try the patterns in the painted room, but move them around the room and look at them at different times of the day. Patterns are great because they stick to patterned walls, but you can also drag them to other parts of the room. Here’s how you can try them on your brightest wall:

Then move them to a black wall to see how they look on both sides of the room.

A warning about gray that I will share: like Anew Gray, other grieges in the same shade family tend to show a purple undertone in certain light, especially in rooms that get a lot of natural light from the north (while in many rooms, especially in the south. page, you will not see a purple undertone). If you see a purple undertone on the wall that you don’t like, try more beige/yellow colors.

Sherwin Williams Amazing Gray (SW 7044) is SUPER similar to Anew Gray – it’s so hard to tell where one color starts from the other when you compare the two. They both have an LRV of 47, so they’re like “light”, but Amazing Gray has just a few drops of black, so it’s a little darker. Amazing Gray has more green than Anew Grey. You can get a sample of Samplize Amazing Grey.

Sherwin Williams Versatile Gray (SW 6072) is another color that is very similar to Anew Gray, but is a little lighter with a 48 LRV. Versatile Gray is slightly redder than Amazing Gray and Anew Grey. You can get a sample of Samplize Versatile Grey.

Sherwin Williams Agreeable Gray (SW 7029) sits next to Anew Gray on the color bar. They are very similar in tone, but Agreeable Gray is slightly lighter with 60 LRV. It’s a great option if you like Fresh Gray but want something light and bright. You can find a Gray Favorable sample.
