In the File>Export dialog there is a check box with a transparent background……you noticed, didn’t you?
This option is when you choose File > Quick Export as PNG – so be sure to choose File > Export As… and select .png in the export dialog.
Added to correct OP’s comment – but sparingly – don’t add new questions to comments – usually here at GDSE it’s considered a bogus error.
What I was talking about in my answer was how to get a transparent background for my .png with a white background, even though that’s what you asked very clearly – you added a secondary constraint to my answer in a comment with no understanding built into it. ie: you only want to crop and crop to the borders of your image – and when you mentioned “white space” in your OP, you didn’t mean to ask about stuff measuring white, but Photoshop “It’s better”. , before releasing your composition using the Image>Trim… Transparent Pixels command.
