When it comes to cream paint colors, there are those who struggle with Sharon Williams’ antique white. The problem is, as a wall color, it’s beautiful, but it’s often used on kitchen cabinets or trim work, and that’s where the problem starts.

However, LRV antique white is one of the reasons why it is not a good accent or cabinet color. The ‘average’ LRV for trim and cabinet paint is 82-94. With the 72 LRV, you’re looking at a color that leaves a little white and goes a little ‘lighter’, so it has a little more meat on the bone than other traditional whites or whites. this

In the next photo, you will see the antique white on the kitchen island as well as the trim work. Although it ties in very well with the firestone, notice how much creamier it is than the travertine tile floor underneath. I mean, they are double, but a little stronger.
My e-design client was really looking for a new wall color and didn’t want to change the trim (which worked throughout the house). I gave him some new wall color options as well as some suggestions for the kitchen island to minimize the AMOUNT of antique white in that space.

In the next photo, you can see the power of antique white in this paint cabinet. My client hired me to find new cabinet colors because the antique white cabinets clashed with deposits on their travertine tile backsplash.
It’s those posh undertones that make antique white a bit more challenging as a trim or cabinet color. Some cream paint colors have a strong neutral base. More neutrals, more flexible colors…and antique white has more colors than expected.

Ahhhh, here it is – the golden question (literally). Golden antique white with other styling and below average LRV (relative to trim/cabin), antique white BIT funky. However, as long as you follow a few rules, you should be fine!

Warmer colors will help accentuate the antique white look as it will blend in more. Warm colors include cream, beige and brown.
A cool paint color will enhance the antique whites and can add warmth/yellow, making it look a bit stronger. Cool colors include gray (with any undertones), blue, green, and purple. It also includes gray, although it is considered a warm color.

Personally I’d only consider the khaki range as I think the cooler tones resonate a lot with the antique white, it’s too strong and the combo is too contrasting – but it’s not all about me (any no time…)
If you want to tone down the antique white or yellow tone of the cabinets, you can apply a dark brown glaze, but that doesn’t mean you’ll have a ton of flexibility, it’ll just neutralize the yellow a little.
