As a reminder, Light Reflective Value (LRV) is a measure of how much light is reflected by a color when illuminated by a light source. A higher value (closer to 100) means the color reflects more light at you, while a lower value (closer to 0) means the color absorbs more light, making it appear darker to the eye . Pure white has 100 LRV, while true black has 0.

Light French Gray is LRV 53. So the name is a bit of a misnomer as it is not as light as the name suggests! This shade definitely has a depth and quality that makes it very special.
With its purple hues, Light French Gray is the perfect gray – but not ice cold, we’re talking about a bit of air!
All grays have their own tone – this is purple. It’s hidden – but definitely there. If you compare it to SW Mindful Gray or SW Repose Grey, you will see a more underground tone, with warm green and green undertones.
Because of its dark brown undertones, Light French Gray pairs well with crisp whites – so consider Sherwin Williams Extra White or a neutral white like Pure White that works with almost any color scheme! A light French gray color looks beautiful against cool blue tones and can look great with a dark, gray wall like Sherwin Williams Sirius Grey.

Light French Gray has an LRV of 53, while Repose Gray is just light with an LRV of 58 – meaning they’re both in the middle. Repose Gray has a warm undertone, while Light French Gray has a cool undertone. The added warmth of Repose also makes it softer and warmer than LFG.

One shade is not better than the other – it just depends on what you like. A light French gray can suit a room with little light, because it is deep and does not wash out. If you have a room on the darker side, you might like Repose Gray because it feels a little warmer on the eye.
Do not confuse the two colors! Although they are all shades of gray, they are very different. SW Light French Gray is similar to wet cement in terms of color, while Behr’s Light French Gray is a light blue that is more blue and cool light (see photo above).

Innovate Construction did my favorite trick for this large bathroom remodeling project. They used the same color (light French gray) for the walls and the cabinets. However, they used flat paint on the wall and matte/satin cabinet color for the vanity. Because two different glosses are used, the light hits them differently, giving the beautiful contrast and appearance of light/dark shades, but it’s the same color!
I know it can be difficult with medium to hot grass to see the perfect shade. I like seeing colors side by side to quickly distinguish undertones and shadows.
