Hello everyone! Thank you all for your love of our national fashion show. The response has been great and we’re delighted…then it’s going to be unbearable. Needless to say, I can’t wait for it to pass so we can go back and spend some more time outside. Despite the warm weather of late, we were actually starting to feel the heat in the outdoor space before one of the biggest projects in the whole decorating: staining the floors. Luckily, I was able to do this before the real scammers arrived. Today I want to share the process of how I took on this project.
One big goal I wanted for our outdoor space was to feel like it was an extension of the interior space of our home. I really wanted to blur the lines between inside and outside, and I knew that staining was a big factor in the final result. As beautiful as natural mahogany is, I don’t want it to look or feel like regular hardwood floors. I love the warm colors of our hardwood floors in our home and would like to replicate them outside.
Deck Staining Project
Because we use mahogany, we have to wait months after construction before applying paint or coating protection. This allows the wood and oil to dry well, so it accepts the best stains and shows up beautifully. Construction was done in February and we let it dry for 5 months before painting in July. If you’re using wood like pine or Douglas fir, you probably won’t have to wait as long (if at all) for the stain to apply. When I had a game plan of what to do with the project, I placed an order to pick out a stain and material for the sideboard from Sherwin-Williams.
I used a brush, roller, disc, pump, and Sherwin-Williams SuperDeck Stain Remover for this project.
As with any painting project, good results start with a clean and well-prepared surface. I started to delete everything on the ship and removed it. Then I gave it a nice polish. For cleaning and dishwashing, I use a SuperDeck Revive Deck and a Siding Brightener. This method works well for new cedar or redwood trees that are uncovered or compacted.
I had help with this part of the project because you have to make sure you don’t let the product dry out on the wood during execution. Naomi and I work in small wet areas and use the spray pump to apply SuperDeck Revive.

After painting, he cleans the surface with a squeegee. Then we leave it on for 10 minutes and rinse with a high pressure hose.
When we got to the trenches, things moved very quickly. After cleaning the entire surface, we left it to dry overnight. The next morning the wood looked beautiful and rejuvenated…like again!
Once the container was cleaned and ready to stain, I went over another container with a broom and taped the casing where the floor contacted to protect the exterior paint.
Now it’s time to paint. I chose the SuperDeck Exterior Waterborne recipe for a semi-solid color stain. When choosing a stain, you need to consider maintenance and how often you may need to reapply. A good rule of thumb is the more dark or shady, the less maintenance. Clear coat and translucent stains require regular maintenance and reapplication, while semi-hard or hard stains may take longer to repaint. SuperDeck is great because you can apply it to wet wood.
