After the “hood” of the child, I thought that nothing would be difficult. Little did I know that a kid would look back on that first year of mine and think, no, that was the easy part. That’s parenting 101. My kid gave me a run for my money. I was in over my head. I realized…

Today’s post walks you through the steps and materials needed to put together a painted brick fireplace in one afternoon (hint: it’s not actually paint).
Blue Fireplace Makeover With Chalk Paint
As soon as we moved into our first house, I knew one of the first projects I wanted to do was paint our brick fireplace. While I appreciate brick and its role in other homes, the brick on our fireplace couldn’t be more beautiful. It has red and orange undertones that scream vintage, and I wanted a softer, more neutral look in my home.
I went to Pinterest to get ideas and found pictures of white brick fireplaces. The only problem was that I didn’t like the whole look of all the white brick. There were a few tutorials for whitewashed brick and they were more thorough, but it wasn’t what I wanted.
I did some more searching and found a product called Romabio Limewash. This is an authentic lime stain, specially formulated to create a distinctive lime wash effect on stone, brick and other stone surfaces. It is a 1-layer and self-absorbing process and is made from limestone quarried directly in northern Italy. You can read more about it here.
UPDATE: This Limewash product is so incredibly popular that Studio McGee used it on the brick exterior of their new home!
How To Spray Paint A Metal Fire Screen
What I love most about it is how it applies and you can cover as much or as little brick as you want. The product is a natural product and washes off within 5 days of application, so if I apply it and hate it, I can always wash it off. It seems less permanent and scary.
While browsing the web for inspiration, a limestone brick fireplace that I liked had a two-tone effect and used a combination of colors to achieve a varied look that looked more natural than a solid color. I think different colored bricks look more dimensional and authentic.
I went with 1 quart of Avorio White and 1 quart of Nub Gray and mixed each in my bucket using a 1:1 ratio of lime to water.
This thing is magic! It is incredibly easy and forgiving to use. You seriously can’t go wrong. At first when I mixed it I thought I didn’t have enough and it looked too watery, I didn’t think the color would stick. Don’t be a fool I had enough product to finish our entire fireplace and completely cover the paint.
Paint A Brick Fireplace
1. I started by wiping the brick with a damp cloth to make sure I had a clean surface to work with. I decided not to paint the fire pit as it is a wood burning fireplace and we will cover it. Cover the roof and floor around the fireplace with a drip cloth because you will be dripping!
2. For the lime agent to work, you must wet the surface before applying the product. I took a large spray bottle filled with water and sprayed it down the brick chimney to soak it.
3. In 2 separate 5 gallon buckets, I mixed my 2 colors that I used in a 1:1 ratio of water and lime wash product, following the directions on the back of the product. I used one quart of Evorio White and one quart of Nub Grey. Limewash processed in brick and stone allows it to breathe, does not require priming. It saves a step and that’s why I love this chalk tool so much!
4. I first started with Nube Gray on top of the fireplace and using my stone brush I randomly applied it to individual bricks, being careful not to ‘stay within the lines’ of each brick as I wanted it to look natural. both authentic and not perfect. I highly recommend a stone brush as it is larger than a paint brush and gets very sharp to the point. Plus, the fibers are really flexible and easy to work with. *Update: I’ve noticed that reviewers don’t like the Stone Brush. I only used a Romabio brand brush which worked well, can’t speak for the cheaper masonry brushes.
How To Cover A Brick Fireplace With Wood & Stone
I continued painting random bricks, working my way down the chimney. Since the product is water based, it’s best to start from the top.
5. Once I was done with the gray and went to the bottom of the fireplace, I continued with my bucket of Avorio White and started applying Lime Wash with my masonry brush, Started again at the top. But this time, I painted the rest of the bricks, quickly going around the bricks that were already painted gray. I was very messy with my process and was trying not to paint completely around every zero gray brick. I actually have a whitewash over gray bricks and it gives it a natural look. I didn’t mind the gray brick wash and I like how it looks more authentic.
