Quonset huts are lightweight, prefabricated corrugated steel structures and have been a staple of many communities in the United States since the early 1940s. If you grew up in a Quonset hut or have seen it used for various other purposes, it is natural to join the movement and look for your own Quonset hut for sale. Still, over the past few decades, you may have noticed an increasing number of prefabricated steel buildings popping up in the area.
Metal Building Homes
When designing steel buildings, there are two basic types to consider: rigid frame and vaulted style – commonly known as Quonset huts. Curious about exotic naming? Quonset huts are named after the place where they were first manufactured during World War II: Quonset Point near North Kingstown, Rhode Island. Simply put, a Quonset hut is a prefabricated metal structure of corrugated steel with a semi-circular cross-section. This includes self-supporting pieces of steel, often assembled in a semicircular shape.
Due to the rounded construction, arched buildings often offer less space compared to rigid frames. The curvature of the roof reduces headroom, offers less storage space and is often unwise to place anything on the walls. If the following construction requires a lot of storage space, a rigid frame can be a more space-saving solution.
If you’re looking for the cheapest building, a small Quonset hut may suit your needs, but beware of hidden costs. When comparing the cost of metal buildings to the typical price of a Quonset hut, keep in mind that you will need to spray foam insulation on the inside of your Quonset hut, while metal buildings can use any type of insulation.
A thick concrete apron must also be poured around the structure to enshrine the typical 30-year warranty on Quonset cottages. This is because the arch-style building cladding supports the structure and must be firmly attached to the concrete platform.

On the other hand, the rigid frame building can be attached to simple piers or a concrete retaining wall, as shown in this photo of Bill’s workshop in Colorado. By choosing fewer concrete and gravel floors, you can significantly reduce the overall cost of the project, not to mention the fact that you can pour the entire slab afterwards.
Both types of designs offer a clear span, while Quonset huts and other steel arch buildings only offer a 25-foot span. Rigid frame structures allow for open spans of up to 300 feet and provide a completely column-free interior. Also, if you are planning to build a steel house and need multiple floors, you may want to avoid the Quonset house. Due to the rounded architectural style and domed roofs, Quonset huts typically cannot accommodate multiple levels, making them less versatile than frame buildings.
Rigid framing is often chosen for modern construction, such as business expansions for America’s largest companies and individuals who need a garage or workshop. This is mainly due to the durability of prefabricated buildings and their ability to withstand strong winds and heavy snow loads. Quonset buildings are generally less durable, even in modified straight-walled versions. If your city often experiences bad weather, you can ensure a sturdier construction by choosing solid frames instead of curved buildings.
There is no doubt that Quonset cottage design is the right choice for certain projects, but is that really why you see so many buildings in certain areas? We have found that farm stays in Quonset are often the result of military investment and that the arch style building is nothing more than an acceptable solution.
