Concepts are one of the first things you learn at architecture or design school. It serves as the basis for all your design decisions. It can be literal or abstract. For example, if you use the literal apple as your concept, your building might look like an apple. If you abstract the apple, your design can focus on how the apple is formed or grown. As you can see with the design of the Seattle Public Library, the form is interesting, but also functional. The design was based on arranging the main elements of the library in the most logical way and then creating form from the internal layout. The most ideal library would be completely linear to easily find books, but that’s not very practical. The architects of this library (OMA) decided instead to build ramps leading to all floors. This is a good example of how a concept informs the entire design of a structure.

Another, and perhaps the most important of the design tips, is customization. The first image shows an example of poor alignment. You can only see a small amount of closure, the alignment of the ceiling and walls creates a strain on the eyes. If each point converges to the same point, it will create a symmetrical and intentional alignment.

The following image shows an example of good alignment. Portals line the center of each arch, which also aligns with circles on the tiled floor. Above the portal you can also see a pointed arch with a line in the middle. The repetition and precision of the elements create a beautiful and purposeful composition.
Scale can be easily overlooked, making it just as important as other design tips. When designing to use the right scale, you need to keep the function of the space in mind. For example, this house featured in Architectural Digest has an oversized front door, a grand staircase, and high ceilings. These features may be nice for galleries or large events, but they are not practical for daily use by an individual.
Perhaps the second most important design tip is scale. It’s really about adaptation and scale integration. In a similar way that scale is relative to the user, scale is relative to other parts of the building. When looking at a proportional building, one side can be double or equal to the first side. The Parthenon is a great example of scale. Column capitals are the same length as the space between each column. The details of the frieze are also in proportion to each other.
The details are essentially the culmination of all previous design tips. If you consider each of them in the design, you can create beautiful details. The facade of this building was clearly well thought out. The geometric pattern is crossed and fits perfectly with the studs. With attention to detail, the overall look and concept can shine.

Amin Zakaria – I have completed my Masters in Architectural Studies from University of Technology Malaysia, UTM and am currently working at DP Architects, an architectural firm in Johor Bahru City. Currently, my main goal is to lead a project that involves coordinating all of our consultants and solving some of the technical issues that arise when implementing the design.
The usual software I use on my desktop is AutoCAD, 3ds Max, Illustrator and Photoshop. For quick sketches on my PC I use Illustrator with my Wacom Intuos. It’s a quick way to go from CAD drawing to digital sketch mode without wasting so much paper on printing. This is a good combination because Illustrator works best with vector files from CAD. Also, sketching to scale feels more natural than spending a lot of time typing with a mouse.
It’s also one of the main reasons I use and would like to do more digital sketching with the iPad. I currently use iPad Mini 5 and Apple stylus. It is a perfect size to fit in my small bag, easy to travel and bring to meetings and discussions. It has excellent performance, can run multiple apps simultaneously and has the highest long-term performance.
Exterior & Interior
When I see an interesting structure, I like to think about the technical aspects of the construction. Architects often appreciate the beauty of such details. This sketch is based on a detailed example I saw online. I like to draw and reference from finished projects. It helps me remember and understand the technical construction better. It can be used for future reference. It’s the same concept of taking notes by typing instead of just copying and pasting.
