10 X 16 Pergola Plans – This step by step DIY wood project is all about free 10×18 plans. I have many requests for a large rectangular pergola with a modern design and solid structure. This pergola can be built in less than a week and can be customized according to your needs. Remember to read local building regulations before starting construction to follow legal requirements.

I recommend investing in the best equipment you can afford. Therefore, you should buy a weather resistant wood such as oak or cedar. Always take accurate measurements before sizing pieces to size. Drill pilot holes before inserting the wood screws to prevent the wood from splitting. Check out all my premium plans here.

The first step in the project is to design a freestanding pergola garden. Therefore, use strips and splash boards to stabilize the mounting area. Measure the lines and make adjustments until they are consistent. Additionally, you should apply the 3-4-5 rule to all four corners to make sure they are right angles. It is also important to choose the location of the pergola and comply with local codes, if any. Remove the plant layer before placing the stickers in place.

You can install 6×6 posts into concrete or cast the legs and secure them with posts. Dig a hole 2-3′ deep and 16″ in diameter, then place a layer of gravel in the bottom. Insert the pipe forms and set the 6 × 6 posts in place (or anchor them). Use a level to tap the posts, then secure them with temporary posts. Pour the concrete into the pipe molds and let it dry for a few days.

Note that in my case, projects are designed considering that you will link posts using notification. If you plan to anchor posts to concrete, add 3′ to all posts.

As you can see in the diagram, you need to cut the trim on both ends of the wood. Mark the cutting lines on the boards and do the job with a jigsaw or circular saw. Smooth the edges with sandpaper.

Attach the support beams to the brackets as shown in the diagram. Place the boards on the post and use a spirit level to make sure they are the right size. Drill pilot holes through the beams and posts and insert 9″ bolts, washers and nuts. Use 2 screws for each joint.
