At the beginning of the story, Father Tim helps Dooley fix a broken cowshed in Meadowgate, the setting of the novel. As he gives Dooley the tools for the job, he thinks, “He’s been praying for a tougher retirement, and here it is in color. Plus, it’s the most fun he’s ever had.” monkey since the time of the raccoon. Not. everyone is allowed to watch a young couple start a new life.’
Before “Big Knot,” as Harley calls him, comes Dooley’s graduation from veterinary school and the opening of his veterinary practice, which he buys along with teacher Hal Owen’s farm and Dooley’s inheritance from Miss Sadie Baxter.
Joining the party is Choo-Choo the bull, preceded by his unlikely name, and possibly the mysterious Jack Tyler, who is always interested in the thoughts and prayers of Dooley and Lace.
The days leading up to the wedding are full of to-do lists and fighting off the anxieties that sometimes come to the fore.

Take, for example, a potluck that encourages people to worry about the amount of wasted eggs and fried chicken. Father Tim listens to the potluck planners and thinks, “Potluck paranoia has taken over. It surpassed Uwe and quickly rose to second place in popularity after climate change. “
Father Tim doesn’t fight either. “Now he understands what happened to the brides when they went crazy, the mother hysterical and the father hid in the tall grass.”
Karon, who lives in Charlottesville, also makes us hide in the tall grass. From different points of view, it shows us what everyone is thinking, praying and, in Laco’s case, writing in his diary.
As in Mitford’s previous novels, Karon offers readers another chance to escape their own world, if only for a moment, and live in a city that “takes care of itself.”
