How To Polish Terracotta Tiles – Terracotta is a popular choice of tiles for kitchen floors and decoration in many homes and buildings, offering warm colors and an attractive surface. Although it is a solid material fired in a kiln, it will inevitably show signs of wear and tear over time and may require professional service to restore it to health. Do you have clay tiles in your home or property and think they need some care? We have provided a valuable terracotta floor maintenance service to many of our satisfied customers and would be happy to assist you.
Clay tiles without regular maintenance will show some natural signs of wear and tear. Usually with tiled floors, dust, dirt and spills can rub against the tile underfoot and leave small scratches. When these scratches accumulate, they make the tile dull and more susceptible to dirt accumulation. In some cases, they can also allow moisture to seep into the tile, which can seriously damage the tile.

If the color of the clay tiles has changed to a dark mark or stain, it is likely that the seal is completely damaged. Terracotta is very porous, so it’s important to maintain the right layer of grout over the tile to keep it looking good. Sealer wears naturally over time, but a fresh coat remains the most effective way to preserve your blush.

If the underlying surface of the clay tiles is in poor condition, it can allow moisture to reach the underlying tiles. This is especially annoying because it is difficult to detect until the tiles are broken. Watch out for loose or wobbly tiles, as this could be a warning sign of an underground problem.
Although terracotta tiles are easily damaged, regular maintenance is a relatively simple process. Surface marks such as scratches and light marks can usually be removed with quality polishing equipment, and stubborn dirt and grime are no problem. When the staining and discoloration becomes more apparent, a heavier polish can be used to reduce its appearance.
Maintaining a layer of strong, high-quality sealant on clay tiles is essential. We have a range of sealants that we choose based on the specific tile installation we are doing. The environment and the use of the tile will influence our choice, but we can also customize the surface accordingly. Whether you want a glossy or wet look, we offer sealants that provide this, as well as satin and matte finishes.
In cases where extensive damage has occurred, for example due to sub-flooring or heavy falls on tiles, we will assess the repairs on a case by case basis. If the terracotta cannot be repaired, we will be happy to help you purchase replacement tiles.

Old clay tiles are rich in color and have a texture that gives a rustic look. One can often conjure up an image of an old country cottage with separate wooden wardrobes and a shiny old Aga range.
Clay tile was actually used in ancient Greece. The Italians also respected terracotta as a desirable material and during the Renaissance, they placed it in abundance on the floors of their churches.
The desire for the look of this material permeated buildings over time, and the Victorians used it to decorate their kitchens, kitchen cabinets and hallways.

Many of these original tiles, made over a hundred years ago, can still be found in Victorian homes.
During this time, they served passengers well, but clearly suffered a lot of wear and tear, apart from the various products used to clean and protect them.

In almost all cases, tiles absorb dirt on rough, porous surfaces, and cleaning them requires a measured approach.
An Introduction To Quarry Tiles
The first part of the process should include a chemical solution to break down the old polish or wax.
Be careful and make sure all surrounding sensitive surfaces are protected as chemicals can remove some paint and mark stainless steel and similar surfaces.
When the area is ready, allow the solution to soak into the surface of the tile. It may take some time for the chemistry to begin to break down old polishes/waxes. Maintain the tile’s moisture level and don’t let it dry out or soak into the tile.
Once the floor cleaning solution has started to do its job, the next step is to clean the tiles by mechanical and hand washing. It often takes several passes of tile and grout to begin removing embedded dirt that has penetrated the tile surface.

An important factor is removing the resulting slurry before it has a chance to sink back to the surface. By far the most effective method is to use a wet vacuum cleaner.
A proper extraction method can absorb and trap sludge and reduce the amount of cleaning required.
Next, use clean water and be sure to refresh it regularly, wiping the entire floor several times to remove any residue.
Once this part of the tile and grout cleaning is done, any areas that need more attention can be looked at and corrected.

It is worth noting here that the surface of the tiles will never be 100% perfect. (Note that these tiles have served several generations) If you devote time and attention to small details, the overall finish will be more desirable.
After the cleaning process is complete, rinse the floor several times to remove any chemical residue and allow it to dry completely.
After you’ve spent all your time and effort cleaning old terracotta tiles, it’s best to seal them to protect them from staining and further seepage into the ground.
There are many different products for sealing clay tiles, and depending on your preferences, it’s worth considering the final look you want.

Tiles have been used for more than two thousand years, but due to their porosity and lack of natural glaze on the surface, they get dirty easily. This impurity can cause burns if not removed quickly.
In this particular case, the tiles and grout strips were very dirty and a small amount of grout was stained with some of the newly installed tiles. The damaged area of the floor needs to be thoroughly cleaned. In addition, most of the old sealants have worn off, leaving the tiles more exposed to contamination and damage – they must be replaced.
To clean the floor, I first used Tile Doctor Remove & Go, a powerful multi-purpose cleaner/scrubber that, as the name suggests, is designed to remove old surface sealant. In different sections, I spray a coat of Remove & Go and then let it sit for about 5-10 minutes.
While the Remove & Go was soaking, I cleaned up the grout lines with a stiff grout brush. It helped remove dirt and dullness from the joints. Once I was done with the grout, I turned my attention back to the tiles, so I added a little water to create a solution that I then scrubbed into the affected area.
