I love using spray paint in my DIY projects. It could be painting something completely – like a lamp – or touching up small details like hardware or table legs.

Gold is one of my favorite colors to work with. I love gold hardware and I love little touches of gold in unexpected places.
So I’m excited to dig through my spray paint stash to show you my favorite gold spray paint colors.
Gold ink changes a ton. I tried a few different colors while doing this experiment and the gold ink absolutely blew me away with the variety of colors.
I narrowed this test down to 7 cans of gold spray paint, each readily available at hardware stores and each with its own distinct look!

I bought these spray paints at Lowes or Home Depot. I drew my patterns on these wooden circles.
To make this test as fair as possible, I painted all the paint at the same time and under the same conditions.
All photos were taken simultaneously, in indirect natural light, and were not edited for color.

Spray paints come in a variety of glosses, from matte to glossy, depending on how glossy or matte they are.
These spray paints come in different sheens, so be careful when purchasing one to get the shine you want.
Neither is right or wrong, but glossier paints will show more dents, dings or scratches than matte gold spray finish paints.
Gold spray paint is a more solid color (sometimes called brushed gold spray paint), while metallic spray paint is less shiny, almost like glitter.

Metallic paints are great when you’re painting metal, glass, or anything that needs a bit of sparkle and shine.
If you want something that looks like real gold, I’d suggest a warm gold color with a slight metallic sheen. The most realistic gold paint I’ve tried is Colorshot Treasure Chest!
For a glossy finish, choose gold spray paint with a glossy glossy finish. Look for the keyword METALLIC on the label to indicate that it may be shiny.
I don’t recommend adding a clear coat over gold spray paint if you want that shiny finish. Clear top coat dark and dull finish!

I assume from the name that this paint color is made to mimic gold medal coins. Do!
This warm golden color has an almost orange undertone. It’s definitely fake looking like gold, but for a Halloween costume or somewhere, it’s clearly supposed to be gold.
Cheers by Colorshot is a completely different shade of gold! It has a very light and almost silvery quality. It really reads like a rose gold color when paired with the right accent.
I love the coverage the Colorshot paints give (they are very high quality in my opinion) and I think the slim cans are very easy to handle.

If you are looking for a lightweight rose gold spray paint option, this is a really great option.
It has a lot of silver glitter that really shines and gives a metallic finish.
This is another good medium gold color. However, it’s not a super vibrant gold, more of a muted color.
It has a lot of silver – not glitter, but bright silver pigments. It really works to give a metallic finish.

This color has light coverage, so plan on applying extra coats or shaking the can a lot to make sure you mix all the pigments well.
In the right light, since I painted it on wood, it almost looks like a golden oak tree.
This is a good choice if you want a deep, understated copper finish or dark gold spray paint.
Do you want bling bling? That’s it! It is a very bright and very metallic gold color. It’s about as stereotypical as gold.

It is very opaque, smooth and almost golden in color. It has a lot of beige, not yellow or orange.
This color definitely has flecks of silver but no shimmer. It is not shiny or bright.
I find this color fades easily, so be sure to use a thin, even coat for coverage.

Old question Am I right, or am I right, or am I right? Is that correct? Is that correct? Is that correct? This week I did a few experiments with four different brands of gold spray paint I had on hand – so we could educate ourselves and answer this question once and for all.

Of course, there are more than four brands of gold spray paint, but that includes the three major brands of spray paint and a bonus brand that I had on hand while painting the hanger in Greta’s shadow box. Update: All of these brands are under $7. Also, you should know, I’ve been talking about this project all week.
I gave each one a box, and they separated the two throughout the experiment, or at least until I had marked the pears according to the ink they wore. I’ve used Design Master (it’s Michael’s), Krylon, Rustoleum and Valspar – it would have blown me away a long time ago.
Who do you make the first impression on? There it is! I, personally, am a fan of the new design master. It has a small amount of orange/pink shimmer. But let’s take a closer look at them. For me, these four fall into two categories: brass/gold and bronze/copper. The brightest gold was definitely Design Master, followed by Rustoleum in second place.
Krylon and Valspar are too bronze for “gold” applications. Of course I’ll be using them as long as I have them. I know better now. That’s about it. I will also note that Krylon is the worst. While all the other finishes were smooth and looked very good – Krillon had all sorts of problems. It could be human error – of course. But three out of four were almost perfect. hmm
