So I went deep down the green rabbit hole of my search for the perfect paint color and this seemed like the perfect roundup to add to my favorite paint color collection.
Not only is it perfect for creating an organic, calming space, but Benjamin Moore and Sherwin Williams recently named sage green shades as their paint color of the year, which is definitely on trend.
Sage is a light, muted shade of grayish green that can be earthy with yellow undertones or slightly aqua with blue undertones, perfect for creating a sense of calm in bathrooms and kitchens. Works especially well in the bedroom.

Because it has a strong association with nature and flora, using color can help any room, such as a living room, feel grounded or study.
For a whisper of color, sage green is a popular choice for kitchen cabinets to add a calming atmosphere with subtle pops of color to an otherwise busy space. Something green makes you take a deep breath. Hmm.
Crisp white, soft gray and sage green pair beautifully for a simple and relaxed look. Try Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace or Sherwin Williams Extra White. For gray, try Benjamin Moore Gray All or Sherwin Williams Passive.

It doesn’t have to be an in-your-face sunflower yellow, but subtle yellow tones like rattan, sisal, bamboo, and other natural textures create a spa-like atmosphere. But if you’re feeling a bit adventurous, sage green works beautifully with a bold yellow.

Clary Sage is a medium tone gray-green with a subtle hint of soft yellow. As you can see in the photo above, it is very similar in color to the fresh sage you just harvested from your garden. I literally cut sage from my herb garden.

Salvia is unique in that it can be quite cool or warm depending on the light and time of day. South-facing rooms feel warmer and north-facing rooms feel cooler.
LRV, or Clary Sage, has a light reflectance value of 41 on a scale of 0 to 100, with 0 being the darkest and 100 being the lightest. This means it is a medium shade that is slightly darker.

The question is really what should not go with it? It’s actually quite neutral and can be paired with dark, light, warm or cool colors, but I’ll try to narrow it down for you.
Since it is a color found in nature, we can first look to nature to see what other natural colors are compatible with it. The following list of colors complements clary sage perfectly. They are soft and muted colors that are easy to wear for long periods of time.

While researching this post, I came across several kitchens with clary sage cabinets. They all have a similar color palette below with copper, terracotta, black, warm wood and soft white. Isn’t it so warm and welcoming?
The warm hardwood floors and hood complement the sage green cabinets beautifully in this kitchen from our Huntington home. Black cabinet hardware also looks great on them. Shoji’s white walls are nice and soft against the green interior.
