How To Paint Your Kitchen Cabinets Without Sanding
We have oak cabinets above the washer and dryer that I want to update. The cheapest way to update cabinets is to paint! I painted our kitchen cabinets in our last home and although it took a while, it was worth it in the end!
I had some leftover paint from a living room project and some stuff when I painted the latch cabinets. So this wardrobe update costs me nothing! Paint cabinets can be a great way to use up leftover paint you may have on hand.
After the cabinets and cabinet doors are dry, you can reattach the hinges to the cabinet doors and bottom. My cupboards had no tools, so I dug holes for new coffees. I had some extra silver drawers in our new kitchen that I painted to spruce it up! I will add more in the next few weeks.
I love how the cabinets look now! It only took a few hours to paint, but it was worth it! The new color completely changes the look of the oak cabinets. This oak cabinet makeover makes a big impression!
Spray Paint Wood Furniture Without Sanding
You don’t need to use spray paint on oak cabinets. I have successfully painted oak cabinets with my fine brush and foam roller.
I think the wardrobes would look great in different colors! I think white cabinets are the best choice and can look really nice! Painting oak cabinets with an accent color, like I did, can completely change the look of a room.
No! The Krud Kutter removes the gloss from the surface and helps the primer and paint adhere to the surface. If you’re worried about the paint sticking, you can kick it down if you like (like I did in our kitchen), but this isn’t always necessary.

Yes, I love the effect of painting the cabinets. The paint isn’t bad, but I LOVE the front cabinets. It’s a lot of work, but I’ve always done this (or used a chemical polish) because I thought it was the best way to make sure the finish would last on the cabinets. I don’t look for labels if it means the end product is not stable and of good quality. However, in preparation for the rent, I finally decided to try the invisible method on the kitchen cabinets of ordinary oak and I was very happy with the results.
How To Paint Cabinets Without Sanding!
In the past, the ugly oak cabinets made the room look gloomy and dull. Then, the light gray blends well with the wooden backsplash and the buttercream countertop.
The oak cabinetry in our rental house initially looked cheap and plain, and it also accentuated the ugly yellow tones on the countertops. We really didn’t have enough money to replace the cabinets or counters, but I was sure something had to change before the place sold. Luckily, I found a light gray semi-gloss paint in the thrift store section of Lowes for only $9 and I knew it would be the perfect color. I wanted to lower the counter and match the dark gray board that I also installed. The color brought it all together and was an economical solution to complete the kitchen.
If you plan to paint the cabinets, you can choose any quality semi-gloss paint. You want a semi-gloss or glossy finish so you can easily clean and wipe the cabinets when they get dirty with normal kitchen grease and grime. You’ll need a secret tool for painting without sand: Zinsser BIN Primer. This stuff sticks to everything and dries in the blink of an eye (okay, about 30 minutes). It is a shellac that perfectly covers the first surface and allows you to create the perfect base for your semi-matt finish.
Although the initial finish does not need to be sanded or polished, it is very important to clean and prime the cabinets before painting. I used 1-2 steps of Pine Sol cleaner and Mean Green degreaser. I washed the cabinets with hot Pine-Sol. I sprayed the Mean Green cabinets and wiped them down with paper towels. If after these two steps you feel tired, try cleaning the Pine Sol again. Once you’re done cleaning, let the cabinets dry completely before painting.
What To Do And Not Do When Painting Kitchen Cabinets
Use a good cleaner like Pine Sol and a degreaser to ensure the paint adheres directly to the cabinets.
You will also need to remove cabinet doors and drawers to make painting easier. I started with a screwdriver to remove them, but quickly switched to a drill, which made the process faster. I also left the hinges and hardware in the cabinets so I wouldn’t lose them. Then all you have to do is put all the doors and drawers on the fabric and you’re ready to paint.
As with most painting projects, the secret to a good finish is to use several light coats, and I prefer to use a paint roller for most cabinet painting jobs. You should also use Zinsser BIN primer for the first two coats to make sure the paint adheres to the hull. The BIN primer is very thin and smells great. This time I was able to avoid the mask because I had the windows open and there was a lot of air flow, but you should wear a mask when using this paint. The good news is that BIN primer dries quickly. When you’re ready to apply the first coat, you can probably apply the second coat right away.
Also, when priming, you should apply a light coat of paint. You can use high quality synthetic or natural bristles to shave the hair, but try to blend the paint to avoid brush marks. Use a roller to apply most of the paint for an artistic finish. If you take a break from painting, be sure to wrap the support in a plastic bag and put it in a cool place (refrigerator if possible) to dry. You can also easily clean brushes and any stains with ammonia (smells but works like a charm).
How To Paint Kitchen Cabinets In 9 Steps
The second coat of primer should be even, but can only be 80-90% opaque. As long as there are no drips, you should be ready to add a semi-matte coat on top.
When the first layer is completely dry, you can proceed to the second layer. Some people like to sand between coats, but I don’t think you have to do it for long, as long as you keep the first coat very light and don’t have any obvious lines. You can brush off dried droplets when you see them.
Many people may skip the next step before applying a semi-matte finish, but I think that’s the difference. If you want a completely professional look, you should seal the cabinet opening between the bezel and the door. Gaps make doors look cheap and dull. I use DAP ALEX white sealer for painting. You can run thin metal to where the door meets the trim. Then dip your finger in water and run it over the crease, making sure to wipe off any excess caulk that runs down the sides. Let it dry before applying the semi-matte first coat.
Painting the doors is the hardest part of the whole process because you have to paint both sides. I didn’t paint the inside of these cabinets because they were in good condition and I think it’s better without paint on the inside shelves. However, the inside of the doors needed to be painted. This meant that the doors were swung far back and
