6 X 12 Deck Plans – About: Hi, my name is Sam I got an old sewing machine when I was little, cleaned it and learned to use it. And have been making things ever since I love learning new skills so I can do whatever I want More about seamstress »
It is a “floating deck”, which means that it rests on blocks only on the ground and is not fixed to the ground.
6 X 12 Deck Plans
This type of tire can only be produced in areas where there is no deep winter cold In cold climates, the ground goes through freeze and thaw cycles, causing the soil to change and move over time, which will ruin all your work.
Craftsman Plan: 1,708 Square Feet, 2 Bedrooms, 2 Bathrooms
Building decks is a lot of work and it’s not cheap But it is possible and you can save a lot of money by doing it yourself instead of renting it Total cost for this was about $1600 The legs and frame were a total of $600 and the deck itself $1000 . The total time over two months was more than 100 hours
If you want to build a deck, this guide will give you some ideas to get you started, but I recommend taking a week and learning everything you can before making a plan.
You don’t need a shop full of tools to build a deck Here’s an important list of what I would say:
The main area of my deck is a little bigger than a 12 x 8 foot rectangle It worked well for material use and produced very little waste
Deck Joist Spacing And Span Chart
I started by placing cement blocks in a 4 foot grid and spray painted around them to indicate their placement. The blocks I used were “Old Manor” landscape blocks I found at Home Depot. Other chunky laid out blocks will also work
Each block placement was dug about 6 inches deep. I used a pick-mack to remove the soil horizontally, just a few inches at a time. The goal is to excavate as much soil as necessary, while keeping the substrate as compacted and undisturbed as possible.
Just pick the top spot and place the block first As long as all other blocks are set at or below this level, things work great
I just tried to keep all the blocks horizontal within an inch, but there’s no need to fuss about the exact height of the blocks. Any difference will be made up with shims while the tire is still on the rack

To set the blocks I made sure that all the loose soil in each hole was removed and only the hard packed soil was at the bottom of the hole.
I added a few inches of gravel base (mostly a mix of crushed stone, gravel, and sand) and compacted the layer by placing blocks on top of it and hitting it with a large rubber mallet.
The block was removed and a layer of sand was added and compacted again as described. If I needed to raise or lower the block, more layers of sand were added or removed. Once I was happy with the height, the block was given another good squeeze with the hammer and more sand placed around the block to hold it in place.
This was repeated over and over until all the basic blocks were completed. This step took several evenings to complete
How To Calculate Deck Materials
My yard is well built and tightly packed for at least 15 years or more Since I followed the same procedure for placing each block, any further adjustments to the base blocks should be the same. Where I live, we don’t have deep winter frosts, so using blocks that actually rest (“float”) on the ground is acceptable.
In cold climates, a “floating” deck cannot be built, but must be built on anchor rods that are sufficiently anchored in the ground to avoid soil changes (surface swelling and changes that occur when the ground goes through freeze-thaw cycles).
The area where my main deck frame is going to be too tight, so I made the frame in my yard and moved it when it was done.
The frame is constructed of pressure treated 2×6 lumber The outer frame was attached with 2/” outer deck screw(s).

When the frame was built, it weighed several hundred pounds and required a handful of strong men to move it.
Along with the frame, I used compound shims ( these ) on all the base blocks as needed to get the frame in place.
If you want to make very small deck improvements, for example to keep rainwater away from the foundation of your home, now is the time to do it.
To do this, simply add the same number of additional shims to the points on one side to raise it. Once these tall sides are at the desired height, add shims to the center pieces as needed to get straight support on the blocks.
Hot Tub Deck Designs To Consider
I went the extra step and added a 4×4 piece to the location of each base block. These were screwed to the frame with lag screws and glued to the lower blocks with landscape glue. Probably too much but I wanted this setting to be rock solid
Behind the main deck next to the fence I framed some extensions to fill in the gaps.
These little wings are attached to the fence post for support, so technically one could point out that these parts aren’t actually “floating”. (But no one does; this is the internet, where people never cheat!)
The landing on the front of the shed is nailed to the ledger with a long lag screw. The shed itself was built on blocks, floating flush with the deck
Cottage Plan: 1,120 Square Feet, 2 Bedrooms, 2 Bathrooms
Once the frame is finished, I use an electric machine to make sure the deck is evenly flat to remove any high spots.
For the trim, I decided to go with a slightly lower grade Trex combination. It’s still expensive, don’t get me wrong, but the price wasn’t far off the going rate for redwood or cedar, and I wasn’t interested in other options.
All options have pros and cons in patio materials Be sure to do your research and decide which replacement you prefer
If you don’t have an effect driver, that’s fine. . Time to get one! I had a large property in this building

I chose not to put landscape fabric on the ground under the deck and some may wonder why not. I left without saving a few dollars and a day’s work
I sprayed herbicide to kill small amounts of growth material and feel free to spray along the edges as needed in the future.
To keep the deck nice and clean, I put cap boards around the perimeter with softened corners.
For the main deck area I used a full 12 inch board so finishing that part didn’t require much thought
How To Build A Floating Deck
You’re going to pay a high price for any decking material you buy, so it’s a good idea to think through all the cuts and consider which pieces to cut from the board and in what order.
Otherwise, you’ll probably end up with 9 linear feet of material in three-foot sections, but the two 48″ boards you’ll need to complete the project…
I learned this lesson years ago and thankfully did not make the same mistake when building this deck
I used it to build a portable ramp so our bikes, mower, and wheelbarrows could get in and out of the shed without having to chew the edge of the deck in front of the door.

It was framed with pressure treated boards It’s not attached to the deck at all, so I can pull it into place when needed The rest of the time it just attaches to the back of the shed 5 Easy Digging and pouring concrete piers is hard work, but it’s easy to frame and lay a terrace.
If you’ve always dreamed of building your own deck but hesitated to tackle such a large and complex construction project, we have good news. We asked
General contractor Tom Silva to demonstrate the proper techniques for building a small, simple, quality deck. All you need to succeed in DIY deck building are a few basic woodworking tools and a willingness to invest some equity.
The deck shown here has a pressure-treated floor frame supported by lazer plate and concrete piers and topped with a 5/4-inch deck. And since the deck was only one foot high, there was no need for a railing Now all you have to do is follow Tom’s advice and build your own backyard oasis It’s a great way to make your neighbors jealous
